3 funny stories {Sunday Snapshot}

Sunday, September 12, 2010

These may not be humorous or charming to anyone else and that is okay. But they all happened this week and I want to remember them all (and I won't) so I record them here to help with my failing memory. In fact, I know they are long and boring and maybe only my Mom will read it all but I do think I have early onset Alzheimer's some days and this is how I can remember things my kids do and say so bear with me people. No disrespect intended to those who do actually have early onset Alzheimer's. In fact, I will pray for you today.

Cotillion

(a very rushed photo of him after cotillion since there was no time before)

Friday night Dave wanted to take us all out to dinner to a Cuban restaurant for a small celebration. So as we had just ordered and Will is taking his silverware out of the napkin, he said, "Mom is this the right way to arrange them?" I immediately exclaimed, "OH NO!" You are supposed to be at the first night of cotillion right now!" We had all forgotten.

So, Will and I immediately left the restaurant, raced home, got him dressed and fled out the door. Neither of us knew how to tie his tie properly, so we flagged down a neighbor and asked him to do it. As the young neighbor man was tying Will's tie he advised him to ask the "hottest girl" at cotillion to dance because he said all the other boys would be too afraid;)

I was so upset that Will was 15 minutes late to his etiquette class...how ironic.

When cotillion was over, none of the kids were coming out of the building. I knew Will did not want me to go in (how embarrassing!) so I sat outside for a while. Finally after 20 minutes, I went in. All of the Moms were chatting and I went up to join them and they asked me to introduce myself. When Will came out, I saw a girl with a bow in her hair. I reached up and remembered that I had one of Kate's BIG bows in my hair. She handed it to me before bed and I absent-mindedly stuck it on top of my head so I would not lose it. So, I met all the coltilion Moms with a big bow on my head...nice first impression, huh? I cannot believe they all talked to me without laughing.

Looking at Will all dressed up..I got a glimpse of what I think he will look like as a grown man for the first time. He walked out of cotillion with an assigned "date" on his arm (she was a head taller than him). And he looked so handsome and so grown up. I had this flash forward image of him on his wedding day in a tux. Sigh...they grow up so fast.

Harry

It is tough to volunteer at Harry's school. It is very political. I wanted to be room parent this year because it is kinda my last chance. Next year, Kate will be in kindergarten and I'd like to be involved in her class and Harry will go to middle school after that and there is not a whole lot of parent involvement on that level. Anyway, I was beat out by a Dad and I am kind of the assistant to the assistant room parent (which is fine...I don't need the title...just want to be involved while I can be.)

Anyway, I was supposed to go take photos of all the kids for the class directory. I told Harry that I was coming up on Friday to do so and he groaned and rolled his eyes!!!! I said, "What? Don't you like me being involved at school?"

He said, "No, I like you being there but....."

(Me) "What Harry? Are you embarrassed of me?"

(Him) "well... no...not reallly...it's just...."

(Me) "What, Harry? It's just what?"

(Him) "well, you always look so..."

(Me) "So, what?"

(Him) "You always look so nice (said with extreme sarcasm). Can't you dress sloppy like the other Moms?"

(Me) "So, let me get this straight....you are embarrassed because I take a shower and put on nice clothes each day?"

(Him) "Yes! None of the other Moms do."

(And many of the Moms at his school dress VERY nice)

(Sidenote---BTW--- I DO go up to school sloppy and un-showered sometimes. In fact, you might remember this post where Kate specifically asked me NOT to wear my pajamas to school and to wear clothes). Lately though I have been on a roll and get a shower everyday. I just cannot win.

So, I wore sneakers and shorts that day but Harry still said, "you had to wear PINK shorts Mom...couldn't you have worn plain khaki!"

I have not taken many photos of Harry lately and this one is not good. But he sits next to a boy that just came here from China (and barely speaks a word of English). I caught this photo of them playing a game the boy taught Harry. Harry's school is phenomenally diverse (especially his class) and I love how the kids communicate even if they don't all speak English.

(so this is a terrible quality photo due to the fluorescent lighting and my camera was set to take portraits ...but I love how "Jerry" who cannot speak English teaches the boys games! He was astounded and thrilled to learn that Harry has a sister from China...although it confused him a bunch).

Kate's "News of the day"

So this one is just endearing to me. At Kate's school they use a literacy program where they dictate "news" and "stories" to the teachers and they write it down and post it on the wall. When I picked Kate up the other day, the teachers told me to go read Kate's news. It said,

"We went to our beach house with all of our sister friends and my Mommy took us on a walk to collect shells and then we went back to the house and had our hair done and put on fancy white dresses and went back to the beach and the Mommies all took our photos."

The teachers said she went on and on and on but this is the gist of what they caught. I thought it was so cute. I also thought it was amazing that she remembers the photo shoot as something pretty positive because if you have ever been with 5 girls and 3 Moms trying to get beach photos you KNOW it was total chaos!

Finally, today is Kate's first day of Sunday School ever! She has always been very happy to go to Mass with us. And for the most part, she has been very well behaved in Mass. She knows the songs and sings out loud. She also knows a lot of the responses. But in order to learn more and prepare for the sacraments, she needs to start Sunday school. I am sick (fever, chills, aches, sore throat) so I could not take her which just breaks my heart. But I know Dave will do a good job.

Of course, I had to snap a few shots befre she left...

Don't forget to check out the clothes I am selling here. I am adding a few more things today that I forgot to post the other day....bidding ends Tuesday morning at 8 am. A portion of the proceeds will go to a charitable cause near and dear to my heart.

Also, check out Jen's sale too.

  1. daniel and i read this post together and both loved it!

i was in cotillion as a child and loved it, except the first time was so strange. i started in 5th grade and i was such an awkward 5th grader -- still growing into my tall body and feeling ever-so self aware. daniel said he had to do cotillion in mexico when he studied there in junior high. very different but fun experiences. i laughed about the bow ... you are human and i love that!

kate starting sunday school and learning about the sacraments made my heart melt. having just received them this year myself, what a special experience to grow up learning about them.

    (love her headband)

harry's school seems to be so good for him! I can't believe politics have reached room mom/parents.

  4. Love all 3 stories. However, this line "No disrespect intended to those who do actually have early onset Alzheimer's. In fact, I will pray for you today" made me laugh for some reason...Just so straight forward and blunt!

  5. I loved reading this post. It wasn't boring and it wasn't long.

I love the fact that Will is taking etiquette class. But, I am pretty sure he has a good lead with the Dad that he has.

And, Harry is obviously pretty comfortable to be able to speak what he is feeling to you! HOW DARE YOU WEAR PINK SHORTS! LOL!

Kate looks adorable for her first day of Sunday school.

    have a good week Kim

Of course, I adore that Kate called the girls her sister friends! So sweet!

I agree with MCW...your opening about praying for alzheimers patients might have been the funniest thing in this post ;)

  12. Precious stories! Each one such a great snapshot of where your children are right now in life. I must admit I cracked up at your getting caught with the big bow in your hair! That is really the hot trend with middle school girls right now, so those other moms probably thought you were exceptionally hip.

    Hugs to all. Miss you!

  13. You gave me the best laugh I have had in quite a while with the BOW!! Oh Kim, I LOVE that you can laugh at yourself and raise the bar for the rest of us to do the same...A bag of sugar fell out of the cabinet and onto my head this morning (it hurt!) but it took me a good 2-3 minutes to compose myself, I laughed out loud imagining what I looked like!

And precious Harry...the nerve pink shorts and looking cute! I absolutely LOVE the picture you shared...total blessing.

Will is too handsome for his own good and Miss Kate looked gorgeous for Sunday School...Hannah is off to Sunday School now too...I would be sad about it, but when I think how long this has been in the making, I am just thrilled for our "can-do" girls!

    Have a blessed week!
    Love,
    Heather

  14. What are you talking about- this was a great post! So cute. I took Cotillion from about first through eigth grades. And then went to the balls (dances) in high school. Awesome experience! To this day I use what I learned. And nothing is cuter than little girls wearing little white gloves!

  15. hope you are getting better… sore throat is not a lot of fun its just uncomfortable and difficult to swallow.

usually, i would take the Nim Jiom Cough Syrup (ninjiom-hk.cwahi.net/main_e.htm) which has a thick consistency formulation. it coats the throat and includes herbs that are particularly good for that application.

i hope it works on you as well.

  19. I think this post was so sweet! The bow story was truly hysterical! You poor thing! At LEAST you weren't wearing it to Harry's school...now THAT is something that would really make you stand out!

  20. Well...I read every word and loved it...AND in some parts could feel your pain. I remember some of those conversations when James & Elisabeth were younger...ouch:) It does get better when they are in high school..for some reason;)

James said those very words to me and then when he was a senior and a wrestler in high school, in between matches, he would come up to the bleachers and lay his head in my lap and sleep...see...it gets better:)

P.S. I'll bet you looked cute with that bow in your hair!!!

  22. Such funny stories.

I can't believe you had that bow in your hair....that is hysterical! Some day you'll know these moms well enough to find out what they were thinking on the day they first met you :)

Okay, I can totally relate to Harry's pleadings. My parents were pretty snappy dressers and I, too, remember a time when I wished they'd tone it down a little. I was in high school, though, I think. My mom had several Lilly sun dresses and they were all pretty loud and I remember being embarrassed because it brought so much attention our way (at least, that's what I thought). And, my dad used to show up at high school events in his pink button down, madras plaid patchwork pants, and white shoes...either that or his kelly green slacks with whales all over them. So, there was a time that I would have preferred they'd wear plain-old khaki, too.

Kate looks adorable (as usual) and sorry you were sick and missed her first day of Sunday school. Hope you feel better soon. My kids have had a similar virus this week (and last).

  23. Haha, I love it - he looked cute enough for his tardiness to be excused in my book!

  24. What a cute post. I've done the whole "walking around with a bow on my head" a time or two until I got myself in the habit of pinning it to my shirt or purse instead. Will looks so handsome all dressed for cotillion and I love Kate's outfit.

  25. I didn't think your post was boring or too long! The bow story was cute. I have done that before. I want to see a picture of the bow!!!

You can tell I am from Ohio/small town. I had no idea what an cotillion was. I had to Google it. Hee Hee Hee. We don't have those things here.

Again, great post about all three kids.

  26. I loved reading these little stories about the kids..... How funny that you were wearing the bow! I usually clip Sarah's to a pocket, waistband, or belt loop.......because I am always in a hurry and would do exactly what you did....forget it was there:)

I hope you are feeling better! Can't believe how grown up Will is looking these days.... he has shot up!

    Take Care~
