Pebble Puppy

Wednesday, June 4, 2008
Kate loves rocks.  I think all kids love rocks.  The houseboy is a geologist so our kids are really into rocks and they learn to identify them early.  The other day when I took Kate for our little birthday photo shoot I could not get her out of the rocks.  Staci, the ones with her hair down are in your honor!

Yes, I did let Kate lay down and sit in the rocks and get very dirty!  I was so proud of myself!

This last one is from last year. She was intrigued with the rocks then too!

Novice Geologists are sometimes called "pebble puppies."

Only one and a half days until summer break.  I am readying the house.  I am putting into gear my summer parenting techniques.  Over the year and a half that I have been blogging, several people have asked about my favorite parenting books. In honor of the long days of summer, I will post about them next.

If you are still reading this, today may be your lucky day!  When my subscription for Traditional Home came this week, they offered me two free gift subscriptions. I guess that is what you get for subscribing for 12 years. So, leave a comment here and I will choose two winners randomly on Friday night.  I am staring to really wonder where all my hits are coming from.  I am getting about 900 a day with many days at 1,000--it is freaking me out a bit and making me think. This is a good way to de-lurk.  Say hello and put my mind at ease.

  1. Hi Kimber.

It's Bruce's mommy (Gotcha Day 4/1/07). Although I don't get a chance to comment very often (almost never), I love reading your blog each day while Bruce is napping.

  2. Hi Kim-

I must confess that I am a daily lurker. I live in Denver and a dear friend is waiting for a referral from China. She's gotten me hooked on all these beautiful family blogs with red thread stories!

Your family is beautiful. Enjoy the summer!

  5. Hi Kim,
My name is Emily and I found your blog about 6 months ago and am completely hooked. I am one of your "daily hits" and look forward to reading it each day. I am a myadoptionwebsite fan and followed Ruby's journey/blog and clicked on your blog through that one. I have an almost 4 year old boy and am pregnant with my second boy. I love reading about your family and seeing the fantastic pics. All of your children are beautiful- reading your journey has made me reflect that a china adoption may one day find a place in our family. Thank you for sharing your life with us- you are truly an inspiration!!

Can I ask you a huge huge favor --Can you post some of your parenting techniques?--If it is too personal I understand --While I know what works for our family, I love to see what works for other families and I am very open to change :)

I hope you are having a very blessed day! :)

  10. HI!I am a total blog stalker! You know how it is...you start clicking away at other's blog links and you have no idea where you're at. Something about your precious blog made me always want to come check in on you. Kate Emerson is beautiful. I have a 2 year old little girl and they remind me of each other, especially the ROCKS! I finally just started a blog a couple of days ago. I'm from the Houston area. Have a blessed day!

  11. I'm a friend of Rachel (Loving Lily) and have become addicted to reading her blog. One day when I was really procrastinating, I clicked on her favorite sites and found yours and Denise's. It is kind of odd that those are the two that I got addicted to along with Rachel's since you all live so close to each other. It makes it that much more fun to read your blog and get the chance to see pictures of Lily on occassion. Anyway, I love your blog. I have three boys ages 2, 5 & 6, and I'm tapped out (in fact they are all fighting in the basement right now so I should go check it out) but reading about the adoption experiences on the blogs really makes me rethink whether I'm done with having kids. My husband insists that if a 4th child comes into this house, it will have to be with my 2nd husband (I think he is only joking!) Didn't mean to write so much. I love Traditional Home (my home was built in 1923) so I'm hoping my name gets drawn!

  14. beautiful pics. The ones with Kate's hair down remind me of Daleea's Peep!
Looking forward to your book list. I recently read How to Have a New Kid by Friday. The title was totally unrealistic I know, but I love to get fresh ideas and keep myself on top of things. It did have some great tips.
I can't help myself.... I know I shouldn't, but I always laugh to myself when summer arrives and you go to Target and there are usually a couple of mom's yelling and with that crazed look because they aren't used to shopping with their kiddos along. Its so funny to me.;) Isn't that terrible?;)

  17. Hi Kim-
You know I am a regular reader and BIG fan of yours!

I probably give you about 5 hits a day as I check regularly to see what the Peanuts are up to.

My kids are "pebble puppies" too! I am always having to clean out the stroller, car, pockets etc.. of many rocks. However, we don't know the names of them like your kids!

Count me in on the drawing. Any decorating tips are always welcome here. Thanks for sharing!

Love the hair down look. She is so beautiful!

  20. Hi,

I too am a daily lurker. My friends adopted from China and like another reader, I got hooked on all the beautiful stories. I also have a non-profit company, which raises money for children's charities - some of them related to international adoption and healthcare. Although I am only in my late 20's and don't have a family of my own yet, I love to pop in for inspiration!

  87. Hi Kim-

I am delurking to introduce myself. I check in on your blog daily but have never commented. My best friend adopted her daughter from China last year and I got hooked on reading about other families journeys to their children. My husband & I are brand new parents......I just gave birth to our daughter Emma Paige 5 weeks ago. I love checking in with you to see the beautiful pictures of the peanuts and to hear your parenting advise. In fact, it's because of you I purchased the Nikon D40x. Your pictures are just amazing!!!

    Thank for sharing your life!!

I too am de-lurking. I found your blog a few months ago and I am inspired by your stories as a wife and mother. I'm not lucky enough to either yet, but I'm still young, and I hope I accomplish it with as much grace and humor as you do!

    Thanks for your great blog!

  94. Hi Kim,
Okay, I'm finally de-lurking so you don't have to wonder as much. Found your blog from another blog but I do not have a blog for our family yet. I enjoy visiting your blog to view the amazing photos of your beautiful children taken with great skill. I am mom to 2 little girls, trying to give them my 100% and more, but hope to be organized again, so I look to you for inspiration! Happy Birthday to Kate! (We celebrated my Bella's birthday on Sunday). Thanks for letting me read your blog, Wendy C.

Anyway, keep up the great blog! I love it:)

Not a daily lurker, just lurk every "whipstich". Our great friends adopted their daughter almost exactly one month to the day before my daughter was born, and I became addicted to their blog while following their journey in China (waytoobright.blogspot.com).

You have a beautiful family! And I love hearing stories from other moms that I can totally relate too. Thank you for sharing your time. Have a wonderful day!

    I teach kindergarten in NY.
I just love your beautiful blog.
I have a cousin who was adopted from Russia. At Christmas my Aunt and Uncle asked my fiance and I to be his guardian. I don't know any other families who have children who were adopted from other countries. When they asked us I did a search on the internet and I came across some blogs that led me to yours.

I started to read then and I haven't stopped!

    Enjoy your summer break!

Would love to hear how potty training has gone. We are into it now. Any tips on how to get her to tell me when she needs to go?

Sorry to "freak" you out, but I am one of your long time lurkers. My husband, son and I are waiting for our little girl from China LID 11/13/06. We have a Blog that I rarely update, it is www.blaineandchloe.blogspot.com in case you are ever board, (but really, don't bother, it is just filled with waiting and longing and no fun at all). I found your blog as I was looking on a friend's blog (To Mia with Love) who adopted a child from China last year. Please don't worry...some of us just love reading about Kate and your family! We have been home with our daughter for 14 months now, and 13 of them were incredibly hard. I took comfort in reading your posts about how difficult this road can sometimes be (I wasn't alone!), yet I was encouraged at how easy you make it look. Also, Kate is adorable! And I love reading your posts about where you find your cute girl stuff. I have three bio boys and then our daughter, and I just don't always know where to look for the cute stuff or have the time. Thanks for all the time you put into your site...I'm sure your family will treasure your thoughts one day. And one day, when/if I get around to doing a blog of my own, I will send you a link.
