So far, so good....and a Kate update

Wednesday, March 9, 2011
Just wanted to give a little update.  I will not do this everyday during Lent but some people asked me some questions.

First, the kids really liked the sacrifice jar.  We talked about what Jesus did for us and they eagerly chose something this morning.  I told them that I will not enforce what they choose.  It is between them and God. But if they want to share about it at dinner that would be great.

Next, some people asked me about my exercise plan.  I have no real "plan" except that I will exercise at least 3 (hopefully 4) times a week.  Today, I did a Pilates class and I loved it. I have had lots of energy all day. I used to be a bit addicted to exercise ( a very long time ago) and Pilates was my favorite.  But my hope is to try a variety of things (weights, Zumba, cardio, walking, yoga) depending on the schedule.  I am very lucky...I live 2 blocks from the gym.  Thank you for all of the encouragement.

Finally, someone asked me to share some "meatless" recipes for Lent.  I will work on that.  Tonight we are having this savory shrimp with tomatoes and avocado over rice.  Everyone liked it the last time I made it:)

Also, Kate got ashes for the first time.  Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation and some years we get ashes and some years we do not.  But Kate, Harry and I were able to get them today.

(yes, I took her for ashes in dress up clothes:(  She wore them to school for Purim today--how ironic)

And to catch up on Kate some more....A few weeks ago (the day the boys had their allergy testing) was Go Texan Day!  That is the day the trail riders ride into Houston to kick off the rodeo.  It is a big deal.  I am not a native Texan but these people take the Rodeo very seriously.  All the school kids come out to see the trail riders and everyone dresses up in the cowboy/girl attire.  Here are some photos of my Lil Cowgirl...

This is Kate's 3rd year wearing this MJ dress for Rodeo!!  You really get your money out of that Matilda Jane stuff (this is for Dave's benefit;)

This is a scanned in photo of Will on Go Texan Day in 2001~ 10 years ago!  He was 3:)

Can you believe I have lived in Texas off and on for 15 years and I have never owned cowboy boots?(but my kids have)

And finally Kate is OBSESSED with these....

First, she saw the commercials.  Then ALL the girls at school had them.  Then she talked about them NON-STOP for days.  I tried to talk her out of them. I told her that she didn't have to like something just because the other girls did. She has never been a "sneaker" kinda gal. Ballet flats and mary-janes have been more her style. It didn't work.  Eventually, she wore me down.  And she has worn them every single day since Zappos delivered them. She thinks they are groovy AND they light up. GAG! I guess this is how it all begins:(

  1. Tee hee- those same tennis shoes are on my daughter's b-day list, so I guess I'll have to take the plunge and buy these "lovely" shoes too! :)

  2. Oh, sister - do not "gag" over the sketcher Twinkle Toes - save the gagging for DORA shoes - that VELCRO!! The twinkle toes are ADORABLE!!

so are the pink cowboy boots ;) I think you need a pair to match Kate's!

Love that you & the kids went to get ashes today - also love the sacrifice jar. And I KNOW you are going to love exercise :) it is so nice to be able to give that time to yourself too - taking care of yourself! Spending that time treating your body like the temple that it is ;)

    And Zumba? FUN!

  3. So cute about the sneakers...our Kate is very Lands End, Gap, and Janie and Jack...no room for "bling" items...but when a 7 yr old desires something badly enough, well, this momma gave in...she wears her blingy sneaks with love and adoration and she looks cute in them too...Pick your battles, right??
BTW, saw you entered the Jack Rogers contest...I was also completely upset when they changed the rules to a popularity contest...so high school in my opinion...so wanted those shoes...a teacher's salary does not pay for those adorable shoes, so I was hoping for a winning entry!
Good luck on the exercise front...I also hate the idea of exercise, but LOVE how I feel afterwards...

  5. I have avoided these shoes like the plague...seriously..Lucy fell in love with them the day we went to get shoes to fit her orthotic. ...the orthotic doesn't fit in these, so we were spared :) Sorry Kim!

  11. I went through the same exact thing with my four year old and those shoes. Then, like you, I realized...am I really fighting with her over shoes???? And she got them. You would never believe how many compliments she still gets on the shoes! Too funny! They WILL grow on you - they really will!

  13. Cute pictures of your cutie pie cow girl!

Oh no! Kamree has been begging for those same shoes and I have not caved yet! However, I don't know how much longer I can hold her off either!

  16. My daughter has those shoes too! I dislike them greatly but she loves them. They seem so bulky to me ( not like her lelli kellis that I love.) All the girls at her pre school have them too. I keep hiding them in the back of her closet and she finds them lol

  17. My kids associate lent with fish and chips (bad parenting I know!)

But I do have a great salmon recipe that I am going to blog about hopefully this week- which is also a great healthy family dinner in general

(ps I think the shoes are adorable, when she hits 20 you will look back fondly on sparkle sparkle shoes)

  19. Good for you and getting back into exercising! I am very faithful to it myself .. usually go to the gym 5 days a week. I have been doing pilates 2 times a week for a few years now and do love it ... really, really has made my core muscle strong and tight and has helped my back/neck issues sooo much!
Kate looks darling in her cow girl get-up! And the shoes... well, they are groovy! ;)

  20. Oh yea, my daughter has those, too. Apparently they're the bomb! Kate looks precious in her cowboy boots, maybe it's time for mom to break down and get a pair, too, huh?

  22. OK - the tennis shoes are ADORABLE!!! Love them on her! Too funny, it was western day at pre-school here yesterday. And, I don't have any pics.. They looked so cute!!

What's with the bruises?. How did Kate earn those?
    Hopefully doing something really fun!!!!

    The shrimp looks yummy!!!!

  23. Oh, I had to laugh at your GAG over the light up shoes. I know just how you feel. Both of my boys went through that phase and I was SOOOO glad when it passed :) My husband and I look back at pictures and laugh.

  24. Good luck with the exercise! I could use some peer pressure to keep that going. It's really hard to make that happen some days, but I bet you'll stick with it, though. You're very good at being disciplined!!!

Love the photos. The MJ dresses do hold up and can be worn for so long. I get tired of the almost before they outgrow them :) Kate looks adorable in hers with the hat and boots!

Love the sneakers. No one here has asked for them, but because I'm allergic to rubber, I get to veto ugly shoes if necessary. Those are so cute I wish I didn't have the allergy, though. They do grow up and have their own taste...and it happens so early. Josie already will wear nothing but jeans...and I have drawers full of Hannah Andersoon, Gap, cute dresses, etc. and she won't put them on...and she's only 2. I've tried to be clever to work around it but she honestly just cries if I dress her in something else. She even wants jeans in bed, but I tell her she won't have enough for day time if she does that and usually that has worked. They have their own minds. Thought that wasn't supposed to happen until they were 18 :)

  25. Oh the twinkletoe skechers have found a residence with us since last September! My granddaughter and Bree BOTH had to have 'em! I'm the matchy-matchy type person and Bree wears a plaid uniform jumper to school and she wants to wear them ALL the time instead of the plaid matching tennis shoes I found to go with it! The child has to have those skechers!

Funny story: One evening after dusk, we were leaving Walmart and we usually travel part of a Hwy that is well-known for "speed traps". I was riding along and the ominous "flashing lights" reflected in my rearview mirror! I instantly looked at my speedometer and was ready to "argue" w/the HWY patrol. I pulled over waiting for the "mirror eye-glasses, non-nonsense, and non-smiling officer to appear on my drivers side". As I reached for the glove compartment for my ins info the "lights" were busy flashing, as I said a "few choice words under my breath" I glanced in the backseat at my 3yr old Bree who was unaware of it all and busily singing and kicking her little legs to the beat of a song on the radio. As I glanced back at her...I realized it was the SHOES that was creating the "flashing lights" and not the Hwy patrol! Oh boy did I get a good laugh at myself!

I have since taken off her shoes if we are riding at dusk/night time! It "throws me off" everytime!

My question to the moms of this BLINKING NUISANCES: Can these shoes be washed? I can't stand "dirty sneakers" and I'm afraid to wash them due to "ruining them"!

PS Love the pink cowboy boots

  28. Oh yes, my girl also has been eyeing those shoes, but truthfully, she hates to tie shoes, so that has helped so far! Love Miss Kate's cowgirl get-up -adorable!

Loved your ideas on the sacrifice jar and am doing the 40 bags for 40 days! I love to exercise -- well, maybe love is too strong of a word! :)

  29. LOL...Wesleigh saw those shoes in the store the other day and about died over them. I don't have to give in yet!! lol...

  30. My 3 year old daughter has a pair very similar but her's do not tie they have the velcro on the side, she calls her's "Twinkle Toes, she's worn them so much that the twinkle part is wearing off.

  31. I've also lived in Texas for quite a while, and I must say Kate is the cutest cowgirl I've ever seen!

Her new shoes are quite festive!

  32. Love this post! We talked with the boys, and Brendan gave up popcorn for Lent - the first time he has ever done this. Popcorn for him is a big deal - an almost every afternoon snack.

Love Miss Kate's outfit! So darn cute.

Kim, you seriously need some cowboy boots. You would totally rock them!

  33. LOL... I had to laugh at Sara's comment about the sneakers. I agree....

The novelty will wear off. Sarah always wanted to wear them, and now it is only once in a while that she will specifically ask for them!

Good for you on the working out! I need to start back on some kind of program myself. Working out kind of got pushed to the wayside this last year and it is starting to show.

Kate looks adorable in her MJ dress.... you are right!! Sarah wore one of her MJ skirts the other day and it was a size two! The thing still fits and does not look small at all!

Enjoy what is left of your weekend~

    xoxo,

    Lisa
