This cold weather is not good for my butt!

I am just saying. When it is cold, I crave really fattening foods (fritos, hot chocolate made with real milk, ice cream, beef, chips and dip). Normally, I eat pretty healthy and I had actually gotten quite thin thanks to that salmonella I had around Halloween. However, if this Arctic blast keeps up, I am going to need an intervention (and some exercise!). I do not know how you people up North do it. All I want to do is stay inside by the fire looking at beautiful decor on the computer, read magazines, sleep and eat. Oh and I am watching a little trashy daytime TV while I eat my salted caramels covered in dark chocolate from Crate and Barrel too.

So yesterday marked 3 years of blogging for me! I was so busy eating and shivering that I forgot. I do have a really fabulous give-away planned for my next post though. You will love it! In the meantime, stay warm and tell me what you crave when it is cold....

I am off to the store to get ingredients for Shrimp Etouffee. It is not too fattening but certainly warming. Then it is back to the couch to warm up:)

Kate and I have been doing lots of "arts and crafts" this week too. And just for the record, I am not an arts and crafts kinda Mom. I let her paint in my kitchen/hallway without a drop cloth. Can you believe it? I have come so far (LAZY) in my 12 and 1/2 years as a Mom.

  1. The cold weather is tough for sure Kim!! I lived in Atlanta my entire life until we moved to NJ 4 years ago. It is hard!! My first winter I was miserable. It does seem to get a little easier each year and we truly value the warm weather when it comes instead of taking it for granted. Both of our families all live in GA and I must admit I've been secretly happy they are all freezing too right now :) It's usually only me and they are enjoying milder temps. Definitely during the winter months, we crave heavier foods. We eat a lot of stews, roasts, potato's, red wine, and the list goes on. We also get into the bad habit of having a dip type of appetizer late afternoon in the winter- I'll make a queso dip or artichoke dip and we'll munch on it by the fire. Stay Warm!

  2. Kim...have you ever tried Mexican Hot Chocolate??? It is made with real milk and you melt the chocolate "disc" in a saucepan...it is so delicious with a hint of cinnamon....xoxo

  3. First of all, great title! Love it! Right now in Indiana, I am typing next to the fire, eating homemade chocolate chip cookies. Cold weather is simply HORRIBLE! (Later I will run on our tredmill in our exercise room...There is NO WAY I'm getting out to "enjoy" our 4+ inches of snow!) I envy everyone who can get outside without 10,000 layers! Stay warm!

  4. I'm originally from Michigan although I live in Texas now. I don't miss the cold days of winter in Michigan at all. We have been trying to stay warm here this week too. Soup always helps! Plus a good cup of coffee with Peppermint Mocha creamer.

  5. It has been very cold here in SC lately, much colder than I like for sure. I wouldn't last up North I like it warm. I just finished a hot lemon tea with honey, yummy. I do not have the fire going since I am fighting a sinus infection I like it a little cooler when I am sick but I am sure when Brady gets home from school he will turn it on when he watches a movie tonight. Good luck and the shrimp dish sounds yummy.

  7. I am glad I am not the only one with all the stay on the couch and nibble on a little of this and that cravings. It is just plain cold here, VA. And there are no warm days in the forcast, only cold and colder. My keep me warm treats....latte's, chocolate, cookies, chili, soup, chips & salsa, etc.

  8. I'm right there with you! I haven't been to the gym for 2 weeks because I'm to cold to change my clothes. Today it is perfect weather, but tmrw it isn't supposed to get out of the 50's. I'm trying to eat really well, but all I want are cozy foods. J just went to the store to get chili and chicken soup ingredients. Stay warm=0)

  10. Mmwah! Kim, thank you for your friendship! Of course I can't wait to see the give-a-way. And you have always looked thin to me. The craving for less healthy food always strikes me in winter too.

  11. I am SO with you on this one, Kim! I am craving really fatty foods, too. For lunch we had pulled pork sandwiches, baked beans, potato salad and hot chocolate for desert (with whipped cream) :( Booo! I want a nap...

Happy 3 years! Here's to many, many more!

  12. Happy New Year Kim!! Oh my this cold weather can put you over the edge! Today I didn't even want to leave the house-it is bitter cold up here. Lucy keeps saying, "we like hot not cold right Mommy" I think I have trained her well:) Wish I were moving somewhere warm! I too eat when it's cold. We are hot chocolate lovers! Lucy has come to love it as well - especially with lots of marshmallows! I have made 2 pots of soup for this weekend and plan to sit in front of the fire as much as I can! Hope you all stay warm and enjoy the weekend!

  23. I'm right there with you, in fact, I was enjoying a steaming mug of Swiss Miss Dark Chocolate Sensation with milk, not water, just last evening and plan to do the same tonight.

  24. Hi Kim...do you use the Momagenda planner??? I am in desperate need of an organizing tool. If so, do you have a preference for the Desktop or Mini-Daily??? I printed out some of their printables that you mentioned and they are great! Thanks!

  25. I don't like the cold one bit and literally have a non-fat Starbuck's hot chocolate every single day. I tell myself the calcium is good for me. :) The high tomorrow is supposed to be 7 degrees. We need to move south!

  26. I live in the Caribbean... So we get to enjoy warm weather year round and I yearn for winter ;)

  29. The temps here in Aiken have plummeted... so I am so with you! What I crave are all kinds of soups, the thicker the better. Which means the more fattening! :(

  30. Congrats on three years of blogging! As to the wintertime pounds... I would be SO thin if the world didn't contain peppermint bark and hot cocoa.

  31. I live in Boston so I feel your pain. I love comfort foods like mac and cheese from whole foods and choclate. Also, if I must be honest cheetos every once and a while.

Enjoy your down time, you've earned it. Please tell Kate her artwork is beautiful :)

  32. Also learning a new language and living in a new country (even though it is tropical) can cause this same exact thing to happen!!! lol

I think I have realized that I am a stress eater! Yikes! Must do better for the next eight months.

    P.S. You are gorgeous!

  34. Happy Three Years!! I am with you on the eating..... It is all the sweets left over from the holidays. Cookies in cocoa or coffee.....and lots of comfort foods for dinner. I am hoping to make the Barefoot Contessa's Chicken Pot Pie this weekend....perfect for a cold winter night....but not so good for the diet.

    Have a great weekend!

  37. Tell me about it! I grew up on Vancouver Island and thought winter sucked! Then my husband moved us up to Nothern Alberta!!! We just had 5 days of -46F!!! Yuck! All I want to do is hibernate and EAT!!! Hmmm! Maybe that explains the weight gain since our move :) I sure hope our sweet baby girl in China likes snow and cold;) Love your blog, I don't comment often but love your photos and writing!
    Blessings,

  41. Happy blogiversary! I can't believe I have been following your sweet family for three years. I think I found you right away if I remember right! Time flies when you are having fun!

I have packed on the weight this winter. It's ugly! We are eating lots of comfort food -- rich soups, homemade mac-n-cheese, etc. Spring can't get here fast enough!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I agree with you on the cold and eating. Warm weather makes you want to move more and faster. Those caramels sounded good though!

  43. Kim,

I am with you on the cold weather and the butt...:)

i do make it to the Y most mornings but the food I eat must be more than the treadmill miles I log...UGH!!

Love that you let her paint without a cloth. I always had those tendencies too...can you say OCD? :)

  44. i know! we've had two snow days in a row (the ground is barely covered:))and I have no desire to be out in public...just give me my couch, fire, and laptop! oh yeah, some good junk food is always good too!

  47. So funny! I was just thinking the same thing. I have eaten ice cream...along with hot tea to warm me back up, several nights this week. We lived up north one winter and I HATED IT! This southern delicate flower can't take it.

  48. You always make me laugh! Especially when it comes to your "weight" - my all-time favorite comment was when you posted about how someone mentioned how thin you were and you said that you were small, but flabby - I about fell out of my chair thinking of Miss Proper Kim telling the world she was flabby (which you are SO not!!)

I have been baking through the pantry - I don't know why?? Boredom, I am sure. I will bake, frost, eat and then research treadmills on the computer and imagine what life would be like if I ran instead of baked ;)
