Pneumonia? really?

Saturday, February 28, 2009

My cute Harry has a bad habit of picking at his cuticles (fingers and toes) and thus his big toe got infected. YUCK!  So, I took him to the pediatrician yesterday afternoon knowing that it was pretty bad and we needed antibiotics.  Yep-it was bad.

Kate was feeling a little ignored and pouted and told our beloved pediatrician that her toe hurt too. So, Dr. R checked her toe out of pure kindness.  Then, Kate coughed.  The doc looked at me and asked, "how long has she had that cough?"  I answered honestly..." a month."  (we had actually been in twice for the cough only to be told it was a cold and not to worry).  However, Dr. R had a listen and told me that Kate has pneumonia!  Oh, I felt like the worst Mom.  We were not even there for Kate and here she is walking around with pneumonia!

Does this girl look sick to you?

  3. Yep - we've all been there. My eldest was diagnosed with her first ear infection at a well visit. Boy, I felt like the worst mom on the planet.

By her picture, Kate looks ready to jump up and play and dance and sing to me.

Here's to quick recoveries for all.

  8. You poor thing! That recently happened to me when Kamree broke her collar bone. I took her in, she was misdiagnosed, and three days later, we were told she had a broken collar bone. I felt like the worst mother ever!

Hope Harry and Kate are both feeling better soon!

  9. Poor Harry I did the same thing a few months ago and had a cuticle infected for 3 months. It hurts...
I am being very careful to not pick at them anymore!
I am so glad Kate coughed while you were in there...Bronchitis can turn very quickly. in hours, don't feel bad.

  17. She does not look sick but kids can be pretty strong. I went in for a cough for my daughter thinking she could have bronchitis again and it ended up being just a cold AND a double ear infection! Never complained about her ears and the doc said it looked pretty bad... So you never know... Hope she feels better soon.

  19. What a surprise...I hope both of them are feeling better soon. In Kate's case, I hope she feels as good/cute as she looks in this photo!

Isn't that crazy how you've been in twice and it wasn't picked up. Don't be hard on yourself. You are a terrific Mom.

  23. I hope Kate gets better soon! I don't think you are the worst mom by any stretch of the imagination! Rather, these things happen for a reason and there was a reason you took Kate along with you!!!

  26. I guess we can be thankful that poor Harry had an infected toe. Thank goodness Kate was with you two at the doctor's office. Man.
Hope they both get well sooo very soon.
...to answer your question...no, sister does not look sick, just really cute!!

  27. Poor Kate!!!! She looks adorable to me...no signs of illness! Guess that's why they call it walking pneumonia!

  28. Don't feel bad mom... she looks fine to me! Don't they need to do x-rays to diagnose pneumonia??

anyway... I just wanted to post... I check in all the time, I just love your blog. Your photo's are just breathtaking...

  29. It seems it's always something. There really isn't any way you could have known if the doctors twice said to go home with a cold, and she certainly doesn't look like she has pneumonia! One of my classmates once had walking pneumonia for 6 months. Her parents are physicians and didn't think they needed to put her on anything for it! I had to get a TB test because of her, as being exposed to someone with a prolonged cough is considered a risk factor.

  30. I've had pneumonia twice as an adult...once I had no clue, the second time miserable in pain. I'm glad Kate's is the first kind and she's feeling OK! It'll clear up in no time. Those lingering coughs turn into things and you just never know. Laura

  31. She looks pretty adorable to me. If you get pneumonia, that's the kind you want...the one you can function through. Emma's case a few weeks ago was so scary and she was more miserable than I have ever seen her. Don't feel like a bad mom at all. Coughs linger for weeks and weeks and sometimes it is just harmless, but sometimes they turn into something more. You'd taken her in twice and did all you could!

  32. Poor Kate! She definitely could have fooled my by that cute picture! Hope she is feeling better :)

  33. Poor Harry give him a hug from Nutty Mommy in Chicago {{{{hug}}}}
Kim you are the best mommy please don't you EVER doubt yourself...I have a lot of kids and have missed so much...coughs are funny. They can turn over night in to something else. Kiss that beautiful Kate from us. I hope they both get well soon...
Cute little dress...I just bought that dress for Livi. She may never be able to wear it...I think winter will be here forever : (
Take care of yourself too Mommy...

  34. I'm sorry Kate has pneumonia. I would say I hope she feels better, but it seems like she's not feeling bad at all! How's this - for you - I hope she can go back to school soon! :)

  35. Man, my son has been coughing for awhile now, the dr. said the same thing but I may need to check again. I worry because it triggers his asthma. Thanks, and don't feel bad. It can turn into pneumonia so quickly.
She looks too cute and happy to be sick. Wishing her & Will a speedy recovery!
btw, I finally posted my before & after pics of my kitchen.

  37. Awwww, poor thing. Don't feel bad, Kim. If she didn't look or act sick and you had taken her in twice before, how could you have known? I hope her lungs clear up soon!

  46. Nope! She looks like sunshine in that picture!!

But the same thing happened to us with Liam this winter. He had the cough for over a month... we had it checked. And then- on a whim- we took him in to have his ears checked before the holidays and we were told he had walking pneumonia. Ugh!

    Hope she feels better soon!!
