"Smoochies"

Monday, October 6, 2008

A few weeks ago when we evacuated from the hurricane, we drove past a place called "Smoochies."  Will said, "Mom, can we go to that store called Smoochies?  It looks GREAT.  It it has movies, novelties, toys and gifts."  I laughed so hard.  The kids thought I was laughing at the name Smoochies but I was laughing because the sign said "Adult" movies, novelties, toys and gifts.  How do you explain that to kids?  Will and Harry still think I just laugh at the name so when I am in a crabby mood,  they say "smoochies" hoping I will laugh (and I usually do).

On another note....thanks for all of the thoughtful feedback from my last post.  That was really hard for me to write.  Also, I know that what we have been through lately is merely a drop in the bucket compared to what some endure every single day.  I know in the big scheme of life, we are so blessed.  The continual compilation of stressful events has just felt as overwhelming as some of the bigger, more serious life issues we have faced in the past.

Oh and we saw a C@cas*st guy in the apartment parking lot.  Dave begged him to come fix our phone/cable/internet problems and he called his supervisor and they let him fix it.  Woohoo!

  12. Kim,

Funny story about "Smoochies"!! I love kids. This morning Carter (6) was reading his list of new words for his reading. One of the words was "gut". He inhaled real deep & said he couldn't believe they had a naughty word in there. I said what?? He said, "Yeah, gut is another word for penis.." Oh...okay! Not in MY book, but whatever!!

I had wanted to comment on your previous post, to encourage you - but giving advice is not my gift & I really hesitate to "guess" at what God is trying to say to any of us. Beth Moore once advised to keep your mouth shut when you were trying to figure out what God is saying & I try to remember that!! If WE keep our mouths shut, then we are a better position to actually hear what God wants to say!

But, today in my reading (the book of Daniel and the accompanying study by Beth Moore) I was reminded of the fire that Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego survived. Beth compared their fire to OUR firey trials. Trials that you must surely feel like you are walking through right now. But there ARE dividends to walking through fire - two of which are that our FAITH is BUILT up & We are REFINED by the fire.

Just as I am sure that your faith was built & your whole family was refined by the trials of bringing Kate into your family. I know our adoption hasn't come without trials and we are already reaping the benefits of the new branches that are growing in our lives and the fruit that they are already bearing!

No matter what, God is GOOD! Like Martina McBride said, "God is great, but sometimes life ain't good..."

Keep the faith & thanks for keepin' it real.

    Love,
    Sara

  15. So glad that you are back!

Love the "Smoochies" story. We had an adult establishment in our town growing up and it was called "The Doll House". I would always ask my parents when they were going to take me there to get a doll....LOL!

How is the house deal coming along?

  16. That is hilarious! I laughed so hard i choked on my coffee! There are definitely those things in life that are hard to explain to kids. Sometimes I do my best, but I admit sometimes I send my son in my husband's direction for the really tricky ones! :)

Congrats on your tv & internet--how lucky to find a service person in your lot!

  18. I'm laughing out loud. Smoochies is funny, but I also get cracked up at poor Dave seeing that Comcast guy and falling on his knees begging him to come and get your cable/internet working!

We are back home after a crazy trip. Had so much fun though. You all are still in our prayers. I am so glad that God has given you His peace and you are allowing Him to carry you through it. I know it's been a rough one!

    Talk to you soon!

  21. I really didn't like Comcast as a company but I do have to say that some of their guys who came out to our house (yes it was multiple times) were very helpful and accommodating. We finally switched to AT&T because Comcast lead us to a breaking point. AT&T has been great and I would suggest considering them when you move! (No, I don't work for them!)
Glad to hear things are looking up, it really isn't that horrible of a city, just a really bad time to move here!

  23. How weird, you and I both are sitting in the Houston area begging God to take us "home." Thanks for the post. It gave me a lot to think about and pray about. Maybe there is something here for us and we just haven't found it yet.

  26. Yay! So happy to hear that you've got your cable and internet working. You deserve for something to go your way after all the frustrations and diffuculties you've had lately. I do admire your attidude in the face of it all, though. I think of all you've had to put up with and I find myself trying not to sweat the small (and not so small) things as much as I used to.

I laughed and laughed at the "Smoochies" story and I love that your kids are still that innocent. Good job Mom.

    Gin =)

Thanks for the dining room information. I really can see the cons of a round table.
I really think that life is going to be going your way soon. I can't wait to see your family in your new home.

Glad you caught the Comcast guy!
