"Somebody" broke my computer again!

Monday, May 5, 2008

UPDATE: Thank you so much for all the MAC help! Keep it coming! I really appreciate it. We found all the photos on my new computer but stilll no videos. Best Buy is working on it (they did the hard drive transfer). I still have no access to the internet or e-mail so I am out of touch with everyone:( But the houseboy lets me check in briefly on his computer.

My computer is gone. It really died this time. We are not exactly sure what happened but they think it needs a new mother board again. This would be the 3rd one in 5 months and it was mere days since the extended warranty expired! So, I (we) bought a Macbook Pr*. I have NO clue how to do anything but turn it on. I have not been able to set up mail or connect to the internet or anything and supposedly they did this all for me at the store. I also think that I lost all of my pictures and videos since right after Chrsitmas (the last time I backed up). This includes Kate's video and Denise's too. I am very sad.

I am excited to have a new computer but I think it is going to take me a while to figure it all out. For example, since there is not a right click, how does one copy and paste? Is there a place to store "favorties" on Mac's? I am open to any helpful hints from Mac users!

Last week, I did catch somebody sneaking into my office and climbing up to my desk! Doesn't she look SO "caught?"

DSC_0013
She put my glasses on...

DSC_0017
and started eating my Fritos. Clearly, she has seen me do this before;)
I think she "overzealously" pounded on the keyboard too possibly causing its demise.
P.S. We have not heard anything regarding the EEG (yeah!). I did not get a migraine (another yeah!). I lost my list of favorites on my computer (blogs, on-line stores, e-mail addresses...everything!) so it might take me a while to find my friends. I am typing this on the houseboy's computer but he does not like me using it because he thinks I emit bad vibes that break computers.

  1. Hey, glad you joined us Mac Gals :)
I think once you get adjusted you will LOVE it.

The only bad thing about Macs is the very initial start up. After that its all fun, easy, and they take care of their selves.

Dont know about your camera but MacBooks work great with my Rebel too.

You need to play around with your mouse pad.
2 fingers together make it scroll up and down.
To copy you mash the small strip while scrolling on the top thicker strip. Then look to the top under edit and do the whole copy and paste thing.

If I were you I would get Time Machine and a Back UP drive. Mine looks like a little silver book.
All day log it backs me up over and over.
I don't even know its doing it.

Have you shown your kids Photo Booth yet??
If not get ready for some laughs!!!!!
My kids think its so funny.
They also enjoy making music under garage band.
They made a video once too.

The only thing I dont enjoy about Mac is the homepage blog that comes with the Mac account.
Its NOT user friendly like Blogger is.

Did you buy the 3 year free help program.
They have to talk to me all I want for 3 years without charging me LOL.
I called them a bunch at first :)

Ask away if you have more questions.

  2. You can plug in a regular mouse (like a PC mouse) to a Mac and you have the right click capabilities. Also you can hold down the control key and click. Google searching things will become your friend.

(This is Clare's sister BTW).. good luck w/ the Mac.. I'm a PC user, however, I have to support Macs for my job feel free to shoot me an email if you get stuck w/ something.

  3. Oh Bummer about the computer, I bet you will love the Mac once you get used to it. Boy does she look like she is busted! Your new look is adorable by the way!

  4. Ooh! So sorry about your losses! We had our fair share of losing pitures and videos so I subscribed to carbonite (www.carbonite.com). It's inexpensive and does everything automatically. It takes the pressure off of me to remember to backup, label disks, keep up with flashplugs, etc... Just a suggestion!

  5. Hi!

My name is Ellie, We adopted our beautiful daughter Tia, 21.5 months old, from Zhejiang province in March. I've just discovered your blog - love it/you/your beautiful "peanuts" :) !

I got a mac last week and agree on the cut and pasting, still haven't figured out anything except the edit tab for that. To store your favorites just click the + next to your search engine, when you want to view go to bookmarks on the top of your screen. good luck and I am learning by what others are posting :)

    Cheers from Australia,

    Ellie

  7. Ohhh, you're gonna LOVE your Mac... it just takes a little while to get used to it. We have an iMac (desktop) but my daughter has a laptop and it's the same on both of ours: copy is the apple key (next to the space bar) and 'c' at the same time. Paste is 'apple' and 'v'. And for a new window, it's 'apple' and 't'. Too easy!
We use Firefox as a browser and you add favorites the same way as any other computer, I think. I am sure you'll be sailing along soon :)

  8. Kim,
Welcome to the Dark Side! Love my Mac! Go to the place where you store your photos on line for the blog - and they should have a download for Mac users. Then, in iPhoto, just select "export" from the 'file' menu.

To cut & Paste, just go to 'edit' or once on the .Mac home page, do a search for 'keyboard shortcuts' that will give you the "apple sign + letter" for almost any editing you do...

Your internet is in SAFARI, not explorer - so that's how you get to your email and the net.

    Your favorites are now 'bookmarks"

    Have fun !

  9. I am so sorry about your computer- you are handling it very well- I think I would be having a breakdown! I haven't a clue about Macs but I am sure someone out there will be able to help you. Kate is adorable trying on your glasses and eating your chips! EllaKate is a chip girl too. I sure hope you get everything back up and running!!!

  10. I want a Mac, too, but I have so much trouble figuring out how to do everything, that maybe I will just wait until you do it, and then you can teach me! Good news about Kate's test, and I love your new look too!

  11. So sad...I totally empathize. Jeff actually dropped our laptop last October so I lost A LOT of Landree's baby pictures-everything that wasn't on her baby website or Shutterfly. I am trying to be better about backing everything up now. We are about to get an external harddrive.

Tip: I have a eye-fi card. www.eye.fi it automatically downloads pictures to your web gallery of choice (I use Shutterfly) and your computer when you're in your wireless network. You just turn on your camera and computer. It saves tons of time because you don't have to download to the web. I love it. Now I know if something happens to my computer I will definitely have them on the web.

  12. You will love your mac! I would be glad to do a little walk through with you sometime. I'm no pro, but can use it functionally.

To copy and paste, I usually highlight whatever I'm copying and then hit open apple c (open apple x to cut), and open apple v to paste.

    Enjoy the new toy!

  13. Hi Kim,

So sorry about your losses on your PC. We switched to mack last year and it did take some getting used to. But we love it now. You just have to play with it a while. A couple quick hints...if you are used to using short cuts like control/C for copy, control/V for paste etc. The Apple key will be used in place of the control key (ie. apple/C etc.) Have fun!

  16. IM TOTALLY CLUELESS ABOUT MACS-- IM A PC GIRL BUT WOUDL LOVE TO BE A MAC GIRL- 1 IF I COULD AFFORD IT AND 2 IF I DIDNT HAVE TO LEARN EVERYTHING ALL OVER AGAIN. ANYWAY, SORRY ABOUT THE LOSS OF ALL THE PICS AND VIDEO-- I KNOW HOW HARD THAT IS.

GLAD IT APPEARS KATE'S EEG WENT WELL-- NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS IN MY OPINION.

  17. It sounds like Red has helped you out with your Mac questions! I got mine at Christmas & pretty much have it all figured out by now.

Copy is highlight & command "C" and paste is command "V".

Save favorites by clicking on the little book in the left hand corner.

You will love i-movie and the photo booth & iphoto :)

Email me if I can help in any way.

Yeah!! for the EEG and the NO MIGRAINES :)

  18. Macs are great! I always used to have a Mac, but hubby doesn't like them! I'm sure you'll adjust.

Bummer about the pics and videos. I hope you can recover them.

Did you get my You Tube info e-mail? I'll send it again, just in case.

  22. Kim,
I am so sorry about your pics and videos. You may still be able to retrieve them though. If the motherboard is bad, but the harddrive is still good, you just need a computer tech who can get them off your hard drive. Worst case, you can probably download them off of youtube somehow and then import it into your mac video program. You are going to love the Mac - I have wanted one for a while, but just haven't let myself go there. :)

  23. Oh bless your heart!!! Well...I can offer a bit of help...to answer your question of how to copy and paste....you hit "Control C" to copy and then "Control V" to paste.
I hope this helps a little!
So glad the EEG must have gone well...since no news is good news!
Have a blessed day sweet friend!
    Love,

  24. Sorry about your computer. I know nothing about Macs, but I wish you the best with it. People who own them sure do love theirs. My tech support (my hubby) doesn't service Macs so I would never even venture into the Mac world. Sorry about the loss of your pictures. That is a great loss.

  25. oh, getting used to a mac is not fun! we started many years ago and i am a slow learner (i also had two babies and was writing my thesis - hubby's timing isn't always the best:). but everyone kept telling me i would love it! so hang in there, i am glad i did :) i love fritos too - best part is there are only three ingredients!! i think of them as health food. haha!

  26. Last year my laptop broke and I also thought I lost all my videos and my pictures, I took the laptop to Best Buy and asked them to PLEASE try and recover any files on the hard drive (even though the hard drive was dead) and to my luck the were able to recover ALL of the photos and videos, it cost about $160 but well worth it...somehow they have a way to do this...hopefully it will also work for you.

  28. Kim,
It is easy to set up your Mac mouse so that you can right click. This website shows you step by step:

Hope this helps! This is one of the first adjustments they showed me at the Apple store when I got my Mac.

  37. Oh my word, she is just so darling, I can't believe she put on your glasses.
I must say that it seems unusual to go through that many motherboards.
I am very sad that you have lost your photos and that video was so beautiful. I am terrible about backing things up and I am so behind in my scrapbooking that we would lose almost a years worth of photos if my computer died. Maybe I should make some changes and start backing things up.
I hope everything else is going well. I have to tell that I am completely in love with my Odyssey now. Truly, I think I have an emotional attachment to my van. : )

I am soooooo SORRY!!! How awful!!!! My husband wants to buy a Mac for the house and I am putting it off as I will want the notebook and cannot afford to do both, oh well!! I do not let anyone use my laptop because other adults in this house seem to do bad things to their own laptops that I am not about to let them touch mine, so I understand houseboy's feeling, not saying that you emit bad vibes. Be sure to put me in your contacts. my3gals@sbcglobal.net

  43. Kim,

How frustrating, but my children tell me I MUST get a mac! Sorry you lost your precious things. I think you can take it into a computer nerd (this word is so wrong!!) place and they may still be able to find your stuff. One of my friends just did this!

  44. Mac Computers are amazing. I would like to give you some advice about Internet Browsers. Firefox is available for Macs and I highly recommend downloading it. Safari is not very user-friendly with some sites.
iPhoto and iMovie are great. The best way to learn is to spend time messing around! I use FireFox and hardly use Safari. If you would like to create a family website I suggest using iWeb-it is super easy and it has beautiful templates.
Mac Email is very reliable. Personally our Mac Email address has helped my parents, and I to be able to go anywhere, even when we moved and this we could still access the same account.

I suggest investing in an external hard drive. We have had several computer boo boos(our fault). It is great to copy important files/pictures on there just to have an extra copy.

I am sure there is another way, but I have personally always had problems with pictures in iPhoto that were sideways and when I tried to upload it to Blogger, it would still be sideways. I found that by copying the photo, opening preview, pasting the photo, then saving it (where you can find it) would fix my problem! I am sorry for this super long post. I always like to say once you buy a Mac you never go back. Mac is amazing and I am sure you will love it!

  48. I already posted but wanted to add one thing.
    ok 4 things

    1. Mac has free classes and cheap classes.
When my toddler starts school this fall I will take one class a week at the "genius bar".
Some classes are one on one so you decide what you what to focus on. The free group classes are good to but you don't get to pick the topic.

    2. the 3 year plan is so worth it and cheap.
Just don't call outside of 9 to 5 or you get people not living here, who dont own a mac, not helpful, and are reading from a book.

    3. I like to think of a mac is a whole other machine.
It's like a creative outlet in a box. These little machines do SO much.

    4. Remember to you can walk up to the genius bar free any time. Those visites are meant to be quick.
Going Apple is just a whole other world in regards to "support" etc..
I love it and find it worth the costs.

  58. Hi, I found your blog through Denise. Your children are just adorable. Love the glasses and the frito. She has good taste! YOU WILL LOVE THE MAC! I have three and have been using then since 1992. I would never use anything else. Ditto on the photo booth, although my boys got a little *crazy* one day with that (they are 5 and 9 so you can imagine:). I never use a mouse with my iBook, but I find that using my middle finger very lightly works best. Also I have my mouse speed set at the faster end of the scale (this is in system preferences under the apple; this is the Mac's lifeline if you will). I saw someone comment on the homepage; you can actually make whatever homepage you want to come up. I have my set to come up to comcast's homepage, sinch this is where my email account is. Again, that is in the system preferences pane. Feel free to PM me if you want to ask specific questions. Once you get the feel of how it is all so user-friendly, you will love it. I have never known anyone who didn't. I recently was even able to "convert" my husband, who is a PC person totally. Denise has my email addresss. Hope you are having fun with it!
