Brotherly Love

Thursday, September 6, 2007
After we returned from our vacation, I was sorting through the mail. Harry saw a letter from the *Make a Wish* Foundation . He was attracted to the photos of young kids doing interesting things. One, who looked to be about his age, was dressed as a police officer and standing next to a mini-motorcycle. So, Harry asked what the letter was about and if that kid was a "real" police officer. I explained to him that this organization grants children who are very ill a special wish to make them feel better. Harry had all sorts of questions about the kids, their wishes and if they die. It was a tough conversation on the heels of little Jude's death. In the midst of our discussion we decided that we would make a donation in Jude's honor so that a child could get a wish. Harry is donating money he has saved from his allowance.

Then I asked Harry what his wish would be. His answer blew me away. He said, "Well, if me and Willie were both at that place and we were both sick, my wish would be that Will would get better even if it meant that I would die." Now that is brotherly love. I have never been so proud of my son!

  1. I love this and it show the close bond between Will and Harry. I remember you telling me about it a little while ago and I was wondering if you would post it. You are very lucky that Will and Harry love each other so much! I hope that the day never come when little Harry would have to make that decision, but what a comfort as a mommy to know that they will always have each other ~ through thick and think!

  12. Harry,

I think it is wonderful that you have a heart so big that you think of other children, and that you care about your bother so much. It shows what an amazing person you are, and I know that when you grow up you are going to do wonderful things because you're doing them now! You are an incredible little brother to Will, and an incredible big brother to Kate. They are so lucky to have such a great brother and I know you will always be there for your family! Your words brought tears to my eyes. Don't worry Harry, they were happy tears. You have a wonderful heart.

    Hugs,

    Danielle

  16. Hope you are feeling better. It is hard not to feel good when you hear comments like that. I hope they will always remain that close. They have no doubt learned that kind of love from you and your husband.

Thank you for making a donation to the Make a Wish foundation. My cousin's 12 year old son had a heart transplant at 6 weeks old and as a result of all the anti-rejection meds developed T-Cell Lymphoma. He has gone through two rounds of chemo and is currently in remission. He had his wish last year. He wanted to be a pirate. So he and his family went to San Francisco so he could be a pirate for a day. It was INCREDIBLE for all of them.

    Beautiful thoughts as always, Kim!

    Blessings,
    Lisa

  17. Kim,

This speaks volumes about the kind of parent you are. Clearly, you are teaching your children to value what is truly important.

You should feel so good about the kind of boys they are and the kind of men they are sure to become.

And boy is Miss Kate fortunate to have such great big brothers.
