Broken hearts and Venus Fly Traps

Wednesday, April 18, 2012
The other day Kate and I were listening to Martina McBride's This One's for the Girls  in the car.   We played it twice in a row singing out loud (we can't do that when the boys are in the car).

The lyrics (which I LOVE) are:

This one's for the girls
Who've ever had a broken heart
Who've wished upon a shooting star
You're beautiful the way you are
This one's for the girls
Who love without holding back
Who dream with everything they have
All around the world
This one's for the girls

Kate said: Mama, what is a broken heart?

I must tell you that I cringed inside for a moment inside.  It made me realize how lucky she is that she doesn't know what a broken heart is yet.  But someday... Someday she will know.  And it will break my heart when I witness her with a broken heart.  It kind of hurts just thinking about it.

I replied:  Well, sometimes when you love someone a lot and they don't love you back in the same way, your heart hurts so much that it can feel like it is broken.

She simply said, "oh"  and kept singing out loud.

There is such a joyful innocence about her.

Martina McBride is coming to Houston next month.  She sings two of my all time favorite songs---In my Daughter's Eyes (which is in our adoption video) and This One's for the Girls.  I just might need to see if I can get tickets.

Another cute Kate story....

I am not sure how Kate became obsessed with venus fly traps but she did.  She talks non stop about them. She is fascinated with all plants and gardening but she BEGGED me for a Venus fly trap.  They are not easy to find you know.  I searched high and low.  She even wrote it on her chalkboard as a daily reminder to me to keep looking.

Funny, but I totally remember getting the boys Venus fly trap plants at about this same age too.  Finally, I found some and went out in a storm to procure them for her (because they sell out quickly when someplace gets them in!)  I bought one for Kate, one for a friend and one for the kindergarten class.  She LOVES her Venus fly trap.  She said, "Mama, it is a pet AND a plant.  All in one!"

  2. In My Daughter's Eyes was the song for the "Mother and Daughter" dance at my daughter's wedding! Very off the wall, but we are the best of friends....and it was special to both of us! Enjoy the innocence of Kate at her age - I miss that age!

  3. She is too cute. I love all her "kate-e-risms"....you should write a book, love the innocence and sweetness. And may she never ever know first hand what a broken heart is! Have a great day!

  4. Bet that would be a great concert!! That Kate is so sweet. My son once had a Venus flytrap -- he loved it -- it freaked me out! Love the vibrant colors in your photos!

  5. Kate is adorable! I just love the photos of her with her Venus fly trap. :) I may need to look into getting one for my six-year-old daughter. I'm probably strange for admitting this, but although I've heard of them before, I've never actually seen one. Wish me luck here in Minnesota!

  6. This post is just about as adorable as it gets! I love the innocence of childhood. From her "chipped off nails" to her "triumphant smile" upon finally getting her PRIZED Venus fly trap. I think my Bre would probably love this. FUNNY STORY: For her birthday she received a gardening set, complete w/a packet of flower seeds. The package boast beautiful little marigolds. We set out a few days afterwards she was all donned in her GARDENING GEAR and was ready to PLANT her seeds!! Plus-Plus right? WRONG!! As soon as she got through *drowning the poor seeds* she expected the flowers to BLOOM instantly. I "tried" explaining that it takes time for the flowers to grow and they needed lots of sunshine. She felt she needed to water the plant MORE and MORE so that the flowers would grow. Long story short, the seeds "died a watery death" and we substituted a "pinto bean" and put it in little water. When it sprouted a green twig, that child squeal like it was the prettiest flower she had ever laid eyes on!! Awwww the perils of childhood!!

  10. Kate is so stinking adorable. I am going to search for a VFT for my Lilly as I know she will love it also. Thanks for the wonderful idea. Wondering if you can share with me where you found Kate's headband? Lilly is a flower girl this summer and needs a bright red headband to match the bridesmaids. It will be her pop as she is in all white like the bride.
    Thank you
    Kathleen

    1. Kathleen,

First thank you for your sweet words. Secondly, Kate's headband is from Bella Reese Bowtiques. You can visit the website to see what you like. http://www.bellareesebowtique.com/

Use the contact link to let the seller know what you want and she will e-mail you with a price and instructions. I have bought several items from them and have been VERY happy. They are all beautiful in person.

As for finding a VFT, call you local nurseries. Ours stock them this time of year, they just sell out quickly. Believe it or not often Lowe's has them (inside).

      best,
      Kim
