"Muffin!"

A cute little story....

We were walking into school last week and the computer teacher says, "Hi Kate!"  He did not say hello to Harry who was also with me.

ME: (surprised) Kate, how does Mr. Computer know your name already? (Harry has been there 3 years and I am not sure he knows his name as Mr. Computer only teaches them occasionally in the ancillary rotation and he is not Mr Friendly.)

HARRY: (before Kate could answer and kinda kidding around). She must have gotten in trouble.

KATE: Cowers behind my leg and gets all teary and says..."I didn't want to tell you."

ME: (we sit down on a bench to talk as she is visibly upset) What happened?  You can tell me.

KATE: Well, I said a word.

ME: A word? (thinking OH MY GOSH..what did she say?!)

KATE: Yes.  When he was calling out our names to see who was here (attendance) everyone else says here and I wanted to say something else.  So when he said Kate, I said "Muffin!"

Me: (Laughing very hard)  That is okay Kate.  Actually I think it is kind of clever and funny but you should probably follow the rules and just say here like the rest of the kids.

KATE: I'm not in trouble, Mama?

ME: No Kate.  You are not in trouble for saying muffin.

Honestly that has been  a theme in Kate's overall adjustment to kindergarten. She is not 100% into doing what everyone else does.  That is a bit "boring" to use her words.  She is far more creative than this Mama.  I sure hope it doesn't get her into trouble and more importantly, I hope her creativity doesn't get squashed.

  2. that was my fear with my youngest..In First Grade I would say she was a bit immature, but by NO means rude..I told the teacher I understand your need to discipline but PLEASE do NOT break her SPIRIT, because that is what makes her unique!! So with that said..you go Muffin, but I guess we have to follow the rules but sheesh!

  5. That's hysterical! It's really hard to strike a balance between obedience and independence. I hope the teacher was not annoyed when she said that, although he will definitely always remember her.

  6. What an awesome story. Our Kate is making her own way in Kindergarten as well - by her clothing- nothing outrageous, just outfits that this Momma would never put together. Happy Friday!

  9. I love this story! Three cheers for a girl who wants to say "muffin" because it's far more interesting than "here". You could write children's books about Kate's adventures!

  13. Her little personality (from the stories) just kills me!! I love that she is just Kate, and happy to be! Such a great way to live and such a joy to hear the stories. Kate, I bet you made Mr. Computers day! You made mine too!

  14. Kate is sooo creative and funny!! LOVE her sense of humor and how she loves to laugh and bring "fun" to the everyday "here's" in her world.

These pics of her are beautiful though she seems way too grown up!

  15. I think it's great that she's so creative and confident! When I was little, I was SO shy, and followed every rule exactly because I was terrified of having any attention at all. It took me a long time, well into adulthood actually, before I felt confident enough to be "different" from the crowd. Bravo to her for having that confidence now, and bravo to you for giving it to her. :) I say, teach her to follow the rules in class of course, but when it's time for those take-home projects, let her get wild 'n crazy and have the most creative posters and dioramas and book reports in the class!

  18. I think your daughter is too smart to follow rules she considers boring ! It"s probably the cutest and funniest story this teacher would have to tell one day !
