My BIG summer regret

Monday, August 2, 2010

You might remember this post claiming my dislike for summer. Well, I feel bad. You see, I realized that I have been a poor sport all summer. Instead of diving in and riding the wave of summertime, I held my nose, ducked underwater and waited for it to wash over me. We live in a great place but the summer is not our best weather. Also, I prefer routine and order. Chaos is not my friend (which is why I only have 3 kids). I have no idea how this amazing woman and this good friend manage it all with so many children and they have a lot of fun while doing it too!

Anyway, my regret is that I hid from summer rather than embrace it and it is almost over. It was while reading this post and this post and this one that I realized I have had a really bad attitude. Darby totally embraced summer with her 3 young children and it looks like they have had a lot of fun. I think I have 3 more weeks with the kiddos (more with Kate) before school starts. I am really going to try to relax and enjoy it. I am going to try to be more spontaneous and less worried. I am going to try to do more fun things with the kids and just laugh and enjoy our time together. I really have not done that a lot. We have done some fun things but we have also had a surgery, a car accident and some summer illness and my poor attitude that has kept us from having our best summer. So, I am going to try to salvage what is left...

"Be joyful always, pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus."

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

And for your listening pleasure..this is what Kate was doing while I slapped this post together. Dave taught her that lil ditty...

My voice is froggy due to my sinus infection..it is not my normal voice.

  3. Kim, you are my kindred spirit! I can relate to your feelings so well! Remember when we discussed our personalities in an email? Yep, this all applies too!

I adore the Thessalonians verse. What a great reminder to truly be THANKFUL in all things, even our adversity. Just wonderful!

  6. The final three weeks will be fun and that is what they will always remember! My boys never even remembered vacations unless we waited to go somewhere until just before school started! Have fun with cutie-pie Kate this weeK!

  10. I can completely relate! I have a love/hate relationship with summer. Although we had loads of fun this summer, I missed the structure and routine. Things were too chaotic for me. I am actually looking forward to school starting again soon.

    Enjoy your week with Kate!

  11. Try to cut yourself some slack, Kim. You're an amazing mother, incredible wife, devoted friend and overall fabulous person. I'm grateful to have you in my life. Although we miss your "you voice," I must admit that the "Bagel voice" is fun in the meantime. Hugs to W, H and K...and thank you, again, for the sweet message. I'm still smiling. :)

  12. Kim I think most mom's have a love/hate for summer. I was always the odd ball loving summer mommy. I love that there is not schedule which for me is considering I love organization. I just have always loved summer vacation but most mom's are happy when school starts...me, I am dreading school starting.
Love seeing Kate play the piano : ) My Grandmother was a piano teacher and I played my first recital at 2 years old (in diapers LOL) Addison is bugging for lessons...we have to find a piano instructor for her this fall.
Enjoy the rest of your summer...there is still plenty left.

  13. Your children are still young -- you've got lots of time. A few years ago I ended up as the parent rep for our swim team and had to learn to just go with the flow and let things go.

  19. I was just having the same conversation with a friend last night! I am a teacher and I have a 3 year old and was going to soak up every second of summer fun with her. I go back to work tomorrow with tears in my eyes because I feel as if I have spent more time nagging at her to "put that down, don't touch that, stop doing that, etc." than having fun. I feel as if my patience has been very thin. But, in my defense, three is a hard age and she is literally into everything. Anyway, I have regrets, too and feel as if I wasted away the summer. Let's not do this to ourselves. We are good moms!!! Thanks for the bible verse, I needed it today!
