My 911 call!

Wednesday, December 2, 2009
Yesterday, I was on my way to the bank and I saw my young neighbor out hanging his Christmas lights. Kate and I went to the bank and about 10 minutes later upon arriving home...I saw a fallen ladder, sneakers and jeans entangled in the lights hanging from the roof. There was a big bush so I could not see his upper body but I panicked. I was actually on the phone with Shana and I freaked out. I was truly terrified to go see if he was alive as I had Kate with me...so I called 911 and summoned to a jogger man to go help the neighbor while I called 911. I just could not bear the thought of anther young parent in my neighborhood dying. He and his wife have a 2 year old daughter. Literally, my heart was pounding out of my chest.

The jogger quickly alerted me to hang up with 911 that there was no body. I told 911 that I did not need them anymore. At this point my neighbor walked out and said, "Maybe I should take that down. It is a joke." He was really grateful that I cared enough to call 911. I felt like an idiot but I have never seen a joke like that for Christmas (maybe Halloween). AND I had just seen him hanging lights as I drove by a few minutes earlier. What would y'all have done?

Thank you for all of the anniversary wishes. They were warm and sweet. Dave sent me these beautiful flowers and we are getting something for the house we really want for our anniversary gift to one another.

He is so funny. He was telling me not to stress out because I was hosting a formal dinner party that night (and while I adore entertaining sometimes it does stress me out). Then he proceeded to tell Dave to chill out too.

I hosted my bunko Christmas dinner last night. We never play bunko anymore so it is more like a supper club but I have been in this group since Will was a newborn ( about 11 years minus the 4 in VA). We had a fabulous time!!! Most of the women are 10-25 years older than me. One is actually my Mom's age and has grandkids older than my kids. They offer me so much wisdom, perspective and fun in our friendship.

I know I look really tired....it has been an emotional week. Trayce's visitation and funeral were the most beautiful and heart breaking services I have ever attended. Her faith and devotion has really inspired me. I learned so many lessons from her life and her death. Even with 3 small children and cancer, she volunteered tirelessly. I used to volunteer a lot before Kate came home and I heard God tapping me on the shoulder this week to find my way back to volunteering in my community. I have not decided what I will do but I will share it with you when I do. I thank Tracye for giving me that nudge too.

  7. I know it's not really funny, but I am ROLLING!! I do hope your neighbor takes down his "display", though. That would have scared me silly! I'm sure you earned points with your neighbor for reacting the way you did! :) And I just LOVE the picture of your bunko group. You are blessed!

    Loved your wedding gown!

I used to volunteer alot too. I cut way back and now only do a few select things. I will never go back to over doing it, but one day I may do a little more again. Do you have a special interest in a certain area of community volunteering?

  18. What a beautiful group of friends. I have been thinking of you all week. You don't look tired at all! Do you get the napa style catalogue? They have your silver pieces you love. (sorry- I can't remember their exact name, but I see a piece there on your mantle) My littlest one has been on the injured reserve with an infected toe- M dropped a bowl (by accident) on his toe on Thanksgiving and I have been to e/r and dr. several times. Hopefully the little cranky patient will be better soon.

  27. Happy Anniversary!

AND I don't think that was a very funny joke. I am glad everything turned out ok.

  28. I would have called 911 too.

One time our across-the-street neighbors were out of town and we saw people carrying things out of their backyard and loading them in a truck. We called the neighbors on their cell and asked if anyone should be taking things and they said no. So Eric call 911 and in less than to minutes four police cars came screeching up in front of the house.

It turns out that our neighbors had given another family their swing set and had told them they could come any time and take it out of the backyard since they were out of town. They forgot they'd told them that.

A bit embarrassing for all of us.

  29. I read your post earlier...then I just got an email with a picture of a fake man hanging off of a roof with a ladder down...apparently, it is a common joke...but I WOULD have freaked out...and It is not funny!!

  32. I would have called 911, too. I have never seen anything like that either, and I certainly wouldn't have suspected it to be a joke. I wonder if there will be more people who do the same.

    Happy Belated Anniversary!!

  33. That 'hanging christmas lights' joke is currently featured in December's Family Fun magazine. It looked kind of funny/cute in the magazine, but in the context of your story - definitely not. I totally would've done the same thing!

I'm so sorry to hear of the tragic death of your friend.

  34. That's odd about the spoof...I was reading Disney's Family Fun magazing and it actually has this prank as a suggestion in there. I am not kidding! It's ridiculous!

    ReplyDelete
  35. One more thing, in the family fun magazine, they had one addition that helped make it seem a little more lighthearted - a big cartoon talking bubble saying "oops", next to the 'fallen' lights person. For what it's worth!

  36. You don't look tired, you look beautiful! I am sorry about your loss. I'm sure that has been so hard on you. I will say a prayer for you, and her family she left behind.
FYI,I would have called too. Harry, you are too funny!

Sorry if there are any problems but i HAD to show you lol!!!(Hope the pic shows up...but the guy (dummy is holding on to the gutter, so probably different)

Well, there is good news and bad news about my Christmas decorations this year.

Good news is that I truly out did myself this year with my Christmas decorations. The bad news is that I had to take him down after 2 days. I had more people come screaming up to my house than ever. Great stories. But two things made me take it down. First, the cops advised me that it would cause traffic accidents as they almost wrecked when they drove by. Second, a 55 year old lady grabbed the 75 pound ladder almost killed herself putting it against my house and didn't realize it was fake until she climbed to the top (she was not happy). By the way, she was one of many people who attempted to do that. My yard couldn't take it either. I have more than a few tire tracks where people literally drove up my yard.

Kind of feel like I gave in to the man by taking him down but my neighbor did confirm two near miss accidents on the busy street next to my house. I think I made him too real this time.

So it was fun while it lasted
