Murphy's Law

Thursday, December 10, 2009

They have been re-doing all of the streets in our neighborhood for a few years...yes years! We knew when we moved in last year that ours would be the last street to be completed. So, we have watched all of the other streets get demolished, re-paved and have beautiful new sidewalks installed. It looked like ours would be done sometime in January. So, we planned our party...for 120 people...for tomorrow night...

and then....

Guess what we woke up to today?

This is right in front of our house!

Our guests will not be able to park on our street. And it is supposed to RAIN too! I am laughing because otherwise I would be crying. Needless to say, we rolled up most of our rugs and put them away to save them from the potential mud. We often lose water as they work on the streets ...let's just pray that does not happen. I would like to shower tomorrow:) Afterall, I did get a new dress!

Really, I am not letting this get to me and in fact, I think it is kind of funny. I just hope my guests are careful tomorrow night. Dave says it will be fun to talk about years from now. As in..."Remember the year the street was all torn up?"

Thank you SO much for all of your recommendations for appetizers. I will definitely make some of them this season. I needed recipes that would feed many and that I could do ahead. I cannot be assembling too much as people arrive. Luckily, we have a bartender and kitchen helper for the night. That way, Dave and I can relax and enjoy our guests.

Since a few people have asked, here is our menu:

Dates with Goat Cheese wrapped in Proscuitto

Caprese skewers (mozzarella balls, basil, cherry tomatoes and salami)

Baked Brie with cherries and almonds

Blue Cheese Puffs (From Stop and Smell the Rosemary)

Hot Cheese Olive Bites (My hip friend, Nestor will ask for these the moment he arrives. They are SO yummy right out of the oven)

Crab Ball ( I have made this for years and people love it)

Cheese platter with grapes

Hummus, Tabouli and Pita (Bought at a local Mediterranean Restaurant)

Empanaditas (chicken with white wine and mushrooms, vegetable, chicken with poblano sauce, and shredded beef) with verde and spicy pepper sauce. These are made locally and we always get them for our parties. Dave ordered 14 dozen.

Petit Fours (Also, made by a local bakery and always a HUGE hit)

Belgian Chocolate Cups

In other news, Harry had a nice birthday (minus one little present miscommunication). Kate and I went up to school to have lunch with him and brought cupcakes for the class. Then we went out to dinner as a family. His party is this weekend.

This is the silliest toy EVER but he wanted it and he does not ask for much. In fact, Harry only has two things on his Christmas list.

I leave you with a photo of Harry and Kate. Harry was going with his class to see The Nutcracker today so he was all dressed up. I could not resist a photo.

Harry was running late for school and was NOT interested in stopping for a photo! He enjoyed The Nutcracker though. Doesn't he look handsome?

  13. That is SO wrong! Funny, but just wrong.

The menu looks yummy! Seriously...baked brie and chocolate cups...HELLO!!

My son is eleven and is trying to convince me that his sister "needs" that crayon maker. You know because it would not be cool for an eleven year old boy to want it :)

  15. So glad you're going to make the brie. You won't be disappointed! It has always been a hit at any of my get togethers.

I'm sure once your guests enter your home and the door closes, everyone will forget about the craziness outside and enjoy their time with you and your family. Enjoy!!!

I seem to forget this, but life reminds me all of the time (like my visit to our home in Oxnard today. I was greeted with an inch of water in my living room!).
I wish I could come to your party. The menus looks delicious.
    Happy Birthday to Harry.

  18. Handsome indeed! I can't even believe that is what your street looks like! You are handling it so well. I would be such a mess. I would be laughing about it NEXT year, but surely not this year. And you have a birthday party, too!?! Oh my! I am sure your party will go off perfectly, and once people set foot inside your door, you will all forget about the mess outside. Have fun and take lots of pics! The menu sounds fabulous!

  21. Kim, sorry to say it...but I could not help but laugh watching your movie...never fails does it? Your menu sounds wonderful! I hope the rain holds off until after your party so that your guest do not have to walk far in the rain! That Harry is something else! He looked very handsome all dressed up. Hope he enjoyed the ballet.
Can't wait to get a report on the outcome of the party and the road!!!
    Have a great time!
