They have been re-doing all of the streets in our neighborhood for a few years...yes years! We knew when we moved in last year that ours would be the last street to be completed. So, we have watched all of the other streets get demolished, re-paved and have beautiful new sidewalks installed. It looked like ours would be done sometime in January. So, we planned our party...for 120 people...for tomorrow night...
and then....
Guess what we woke up to today?
Our guests will not be able to park on our street. And it is supposed to RAIN too! I am laughing because otherwise I would be crying. Needless to say, we rolled up most of our rugs and put them away to save them from the potential mud. We often lose water as they work on the streets ...let's just pray that does not happen. I would like to shower tomorrow:) Afterall, I did get a new dress!
Really, I am not letting this get to me and in fact, I think it is kind of funny. I just hope my guests are careful tomorrow night. Dave says it will be fun to talk about years from now. As in..."Remember the year the street was all torn up?"
Thank you SO much for all of your recommendations for appetizers. I will definitely make some of them this season. I needed recipes that would feed many and that I could do ahead. I cannot be assembling too much as people arrive. Luckily, we have a bartender and kitchen helper for the night. That way, Dave and I can relax and enjoy our guests.
Since a few people have asked, here is our menu:
Dates with Goat Cheese wrapped in Proscuitto
Caprese skewers (mozzarella balls, basil, cherry tomatoes and salami)
Baked Brie with cherries and almonds
Blue Cheese Puffs (From Stop and Smell the Rosemary)
Hot Cheese Olive Bites (My hip friend, Nestor will ask for these the moment he arrives. They are SO yummy right out of the oven)
Crab Ball ( I have made this for years and people love it)
Cheese platter with grapes
Hummus, Tabouli and Pita (Bought at a local Mediterranean Restaurant)
Empanaditas (chicken with white wine and mushrooms, vegetable, chicken with poblano sauce, and shredded beef) with verde and spicy pepper sauce. These are made locally and we always get them for our parties. Dave ordered 14 dozen.
Petit Fours (Also, made by a local bakery and always a HUGE hit)
Belgian Chocolate Cups
In other news, Harry had a nice birthday (minus one little present miscommunication). Kate and I went up to school to have lunch with him and brought cupcakes for the class. Then we went out to dinner as a family. His party is this weekend.
This is the silliest toy EVER but he wanted it and he does not ask for much. In fact, Harry only has two things on his Christmas list.
I leave you with a photo of Harry and Kate. Harry was going with his class to see The Nutcracker today so he was all dressed up. I could not resist a photo.
Glad Harry had a good birthday! Sad to say but it looks like your neighbors can't even get out of their driveway! I know you will still have fun at your party! Enjoy! Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteWait, it that bulldozers (or excavators)!! OMG, this post is hilarious!!!! I kid you not, this would DEFINITELY happen to me!! You just gotta post pictures of the guest arriving w/their pant leg rolled up!! LOL!!! You're right better to laugh than cry, nothing worse than mascara running down your face and greeting your guest w/WELCOME TO OUR HOME!!! Party Hardy Chica!!!
ReplyDeleteBTW...Harry's not only handsome but a good sport!! Always so cooperative!!! I like that!!
Hary is WAy cute dressed up like a little man. and ...oh KIm! So sorry about the street but LOVE your attitude! It IS all going to be just fine!! (Something will happen and you will figure out why it 'needed' to go like this!)
ReplyDeleteI can't even believe it!!!!! You are right...no need to get too upset, there's nothing you can do about it!! Unbelievable!! I'm so sorry!
ReplyDeleteHarry looks very handsome all dressed up!!
I'm so glad that Harry had a nice birthday and that you got your menu finalized. I'll be thinking of you and your guests tomorrow night - I hope it all works out! And Kate is, as always, so cute!
ReplyDeleteOh Kim, no way!!!! I think that you have had enough drama in your life now. Glad you are laughing about it, and yes, what a fun story it will be someday~
ReplyDeleteOh, and the menu sounds delicious...wish I could fly in for the party!!
ReplyDeleteoh kim! I am glad you can laugh!!! Thanks for the olive recipe - the menu look delicious
ReplyDeleteOMW... what more can I say?!?!
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe the picture of your street. You'd think they'd have given you some sort of notice!
ReplyDeleteYour menu sounds fabulous! What time should I be there? :)
Love the picture of handsome Harry and cutie-pie Kate.
OH MY GOSH! It's good you're able to laugh, I'd be a hot mess about now. Love the pics of handsome Harry, glad he had a good birthday! Good luck with your big party!
ReplyDeleteThis is hilarious! You are handling it well...I'm like you, though, I'd have to laugh so I wouldn't cry!! Hoping the rain isn't too bad tomorrow for your party. Can't wait to hear about it!
ReplyDeleteThat is SO wrong! Funny, but just wrong.
ReplyDeleteThe menu looks yummy! Seriously...baked brie and chocolate cups...HELLO!!
My son is eleven and is trying to convince me that his sister "needs" that crayon maker. You know because it would not be cool for an eleven year old boy to want it :)
you poor thing...i would be a basket-case! love the menu...wish we had something festive this year. we usually have an annual Christmas party, but i am not sure when we'll ever be sane enough to host again! sigh! just trying to keep my head above water here in NC.
ReplyDeleteSo glad you're going to make the brie. You won't be disappointed! It has always been a hit at any of my get togethers.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure once your guests enter your home and the door closes, everyone will forget about the craziness outside and enjoy their time with you and your family. Enjoy!!!
And the man in the excavator thought you were taking his picture because he was cute! :) Have a wonderful party! Your menu sounds amazing!
ReplyDeleteLife really does send us curve balls!
ReplyDeleteI seem to forget this, but life reminds me all of the time (like my visit to our home in Oxnard today. I was greeted with an inch of water in my living room!).
I wish I could come to your party. The menus looks delicious.
Happy Birthday to Harry.

Handsome indeed! I can't even believe that is what your street looks like! You are handling it so well. I would be such a mess. I would be laughing about it NEXT year, but surely not this year. And you have a birthday party, too!?! Oh my! I am sure your party will go off perfectly, and once people set foot inside your door, you will all forget about the mess outside. Have fun and take lots of pics! The menu sounds fabulous!
ReplyDeleteWhat a smart idea to lift your rugs. I'd be doing the same!
ReplyDeleteI tell you, I think you're amazing hosting a party for a hundred people AND cooking! Wow. Very impressed! Menu looks amazing too, makes me wish I was coming!
Hope it is great as I know it will. Let us know!
Jill xx
Have a wonderful party!
ReplyDeleteI think that it is great that you are laughing--I do that a lot so as not to cry like I am a woman having a nervous breakdown!!
Love the menu-pls tell the olive ball recipe, I have been thinking about those for years and this is the year I am makin' 'em!!
Kim, sorry to say it...but I could not help but laugh watching your movie...never fails does it? Your menu sounds wonderful! I hope the rain holds off until after your party so that your guest do not have to walk far in the rain! That Harry is something else! He looked very handsome all dressed up. Hope he enjoyed the ballet.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to get a report on the outcome of the party and the road!!!
Have a great time!
Norah
I feel for you and with you current attitude your party will be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI cannot even believe the road. How could they not warn you, in writing no less? How are you getting in and out of the driveway yourself?
ReplyDeleteMenu looks awesome! YUM!
That crayon maker looks very up my alley - might have to add that to the wish lists :)
Super, duper good luck with the party!
Awww..... Look at your handsome boy! I hope he enjoyed the Nutcracker.
ReplyDeleteOh my word...the road... Were you not freaking out when you realized it?? You seem unbelievably calm....
The menu sounds fantastic....I wish I were coming too. Have a drink for me and enjoy every second of the evening!!
xo,
Lisa
Oh my goodness...I wouldn't have believed the mess on your street without seeing it. As Dave said, you will talk about it for years.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the night...it's going to be wonderful!
Oh no, on the street construction. But your menu looks yummy! Have a blast.
ReplyDeleteOh..... dear...... lol
ReplyDeleteOk, I have to just say the truth... it really stinks! However, once your guests make it to your home the party will be a smash... how could it not be with their host and hostess and that menu sounds so yummy it could bring a tear to a glass eye! hehee
So glad Harry had a wonderful birthday and love the pics of he and Kate.
Have a wonderful time,
Love,
Daleea

NO WAY! I am laughing (sorry) as I read your post. I can not believe that is the front of your house right now! I hope they clean up alittle bit before your party! You are right..you have to laugh or else you'd cry.. maybe cry because you are laughing so hard =;). I know it will all turn out for you! The children look beautiful!
