You really won't believe this...

Thank you for the prayers, calls and thoughts, friends. Kate is fine. Her surgery went well and her recovery is going okay. She is having trouble keeping things down and she is in quite a bit of pain. She screamed bloody murder when she came out of anesthesia for a long time. I felt so bad. They let us home home which is nice, I suppose. She is very cuddly and clingy and is on my lap as I type this:)

This morning as we were getting ready to go to the hospital (4:30 AM) Will came into my room telling me that he was really sick. He had fever, chills, headache, and runny nose. He had a temperature of 102. We left him home with the babysitter hoping it was just a little bug.

There was a point at the hospital that I realized Will might have the flu. Kate had hives all over her body and she was cuddling with Will last night. I wondered if we should cancel her surgery in case she was getting sick. Since she was asymptomatic, they went ahead with it. In recovery, I called our pediatrician and asked if my babysitter could bring Will in. She did and he has THE FLU! He tested positive for influenza A and they think it is the swine flu (80-85% sure) because the regular seasonal flu is not usually active this early. So we have two patients isolated in different parts of the house. Will is quarantined to his room and we are wearing masks when we go in.

**He just had an AWFUL hallucination that a blanket was attacking him (my second child to have a horrendous reaction to Tamiflu!) You might remember Kate's AWFUL reaction to Tamiflu . I knew that Tamiflu caused hallucinations in Asians sometimes but what we saw in Will was terrifying. No more for our family. Will took it a few years ago without any side effects and I was taking care of Kate so I did not even think about Tamiflu but this was really, really scary.

We really have to try to keep Kate from getting this flu.

I am praying that no one else gets it right now. Here are a few lousy photos....I wish I had taken a few more because this is something I would put in her scrapbook but I was pre-occupied. The quality of the photos is terrible.

Sorry if this post is all over the place and poorly written. I am tired and it has been quite a day!

  1. Kim - sorry to hear about Will - praying for strong immune systems for the rest of the family - tell Dave Im praying especially for him tonight :)

I saw the picture of Kate with her popsicle over the pot - I use the round plastic lids from yogurt containers or sour cream or other containers - cut a slit in the middle and stick the popsicle stick through the slit. Becky holds the popsicle under the container lid and the mess is 95% contained

  6. Oh my word, I cannot imagine. Poor little Kate. I believe we caught swine flu when we were in China. Be careful, it is VERY contagious.

I'm so so so sorry this is all happening at once for the Peanuts gang. I've been praying for all of you and glad to hear Kate is well relativley speaking)... Poor Will, I hope Harry and Kate do not get it.

Lastly I have to say for some reason when one of The Peanuts is sick so many other things happen to you guys as well. You ALWAYS handle the situation with grace even though you may not think it. I am so inspired by you. You are such a role model MOM.

Sending a hug for all and praying this will pass quickly.

    Blessings

  12. Oh my---FLU--what a shame--by the last photo, Kate already looks like she is on the road to recovery--will keep you all in our prayers--Unbelieveable--I just can not believe Will picked up that flu!!!!
Hope you all can get some rest and no one else comes down with it!!!

  13. Oh my you have had quite a day!

I'm glad Kate did okay and that they let you go home! That is wonderful news....things are always alittle easier to deal with in the comfort of your own home. I pray that she will get some rest tonight and have a speedy recovery. Seems I remember the first 2 days were the most difficult and then it started to get better quickly. Bad thing when Lucas had it was that he wouldn't touch popsicles or ice cream...everything they said would make him feel better and he wouldn't take it!

Hope Will feels better soon!!!!! praying it won't be the swine flu. My parents neighbor got it and was quarantined for well over a week. Hope you all can get some rest tonight!

"Bring the Rain." You can do this Kim!!! I have seen you juggle, manage, work through, and conquer ALOT in the last 12 months! We are praying for protection for ALL of you!

Precious Kate looks so tiny in Dave's strong Daddy arms..... She is one cutie even when she is in recovery... So sorry I am not there to help! I would be scooping up Harry for a while for you!

What is with that Tamaflu? I am soooo sorry!

    Love ya,

  16. so sorry about Will! Jane Harris had the flu tested positive for A and B last August. I am betting that she had swine as well. She also hallucinated on Tamiflu. Our hardwood floors were snakes. It was AWFUL.

Hopefully Kate will quit throwing up once the anesthesia is out of her system.

Praying for speedy recoverys for both and good health for the rest of you!

  57. oh no!!! 5 out of six of my family has had the swine flu this summer. The doctor told me that virtually everyone who has cold or flu symtoms has the Swine flu. It is a pretty bad flu. We were told that inhalers shorten the duration more than Tamiflu, (both nasal and lung inhalers) My husband ended up taking two antibiotics for secondary bronchial infections. Hoping that nobody else gets the flu, and that Kate and Will get better quickly!

  62. Kim, thanks for stopping by! I do plan to keep up the lunchbox posts. I purchased the container for Emme's lunches here:

It's great because it comes with four removable "cubbies", so you can remove as necessary. It's deep enough to fill her up at lunch time.

  63. So glad to hear that everything went well with Kate. I am sorry to hear about Will. I had the swine flu in the summer (the doctor thinks - no more individual tracking is being done in Canada). It took me about 4 days longer to get over it than the regular flu. My husband and the girls didn't catch it as I stayed well away from them for a week. I hope no one else in your family catches it.

  67. WOW, Kim! You've got your hands full and I'm keeping you and your family in my prayers. My son, Hagan, has his tonsils and adenoids removed when he was four. The surgeon said they were the largest he'd ever seen. He, too, snored like a bandit and we could hear him through two floors! He also suffered from sleep apnea, unbeknownst to us for a long time. After recovery, he truly WAS a different child. I think finally getting a good night's sleep completely transformed him.

Hope things improve for you all-around. Hugs.

  72. I just returned from a full day teaching inservice where they spoke about swine flu...and now poor Will! I will certainly keep you all in my thoughts...I never knew about the effects of Tamiflu and with Kate being Chinese, it scares me to think of what Kate could take if it hits...she is in kindergarten and I wish I could put her in a decontamination suit (and me once all the kids come next week!) I am glad that Kate's surgery went well....I thought about her today...Stay as strong as you can...you have plenty of people thinking of you!

  81. I'm so sorry Kim...Carter had "Influenza A" in February, and was really sick for a little more than 24 hours (worse than I've ever seem him, not aware of his surroundings), but bounced back quickly. Brad went on tamiflu for a few days, but stopped after a few days. Neither of us got it. (I can't use Tamiflu b/c of asthma). It was scary to hear the "influenza" dx, but all in all, it wasn't bad. I hope the same goes for your family, and know it's worse with Kate just coming out of surgery. I hope for the best though
