Isn't it just a little early?

ROwreath2
Last night, Will and I spotted this wreath (and several others) at one of our local shopping centers.  Can you believe it?!  It is October 17th and the Christmas decorations are going up. I love Christmas but part of why I love it is that it is special and infrequent. I think it really diminishes the true meaning of Christmas when people start decorating over 2 months ahead of Jesus' birthday.

Thank you for all of the wonderful advice on painting (or not) the built-ins.  Seriously, I should ask for your opinions more often. Y'all are so smart. In fact, let me throw another issue out for your advice...we are putting wood plantation shutters (painted white) in all the peanuts' bedrooms.  I usually (in our previous 3 homes) order the 2 and 1/2 inch shutters.  But all three of the companies that gave me quotes suggested 3 and 1/2 inch.  I think the 2 and 1/2 are more traditional (which is my style) but the 3 and 1/2 will let in more natural light and allow more of a view out too. I am torn and I need to finalize the order Monday!

Oh and just so you know how much I value your opinions, I have decided to wait on painting the wood. That was the overwhelming majority of your advice. It is gorgeous dark wood but my instincts tell me to paint it. I was completely ready to do it. However, I have decided that I should probably wait and see.  So, I will live with them for 6 months and revisit the notion.

P.S. Remember when I was taking Kate to have her picture taken and she got a bloody nose and bled all over her dress?  Well, the photographer posted a sneak peek here on her blog.  Scroll to the very last photo.  I get to see all of Kate's proofs tomorrow. This is the first time Kate has let a photographer take her photo.  Last fall, we hired a very schmancy renowned photographer and Kate would not leave my side.  It was not good.

  2. I am with you on the decorations, its too early for me. On the shutters, I to am very traditional in my decorating and live in a older plantation southern home but when we remodeled it we went with the larger plantation shutters and have loved them! I think you would be very pleased with the look and the light. Did you get my e-mail I sent a while back about the mercury glass Christmas trees??? Let me know.

  3. Kate's picture is precious! I have the 2 1/2 shutters and I love them. I think it really depends on how traditional the house is. Sometimes the larger size does not have the look of "shutters" when looking at the outside of the house. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!!!

  4. I am totally with you in regards to the christmas decor. It's not as special when they start celebrating so early.
I think you should go with the 2 1/2 inch shutters. It's what you liked in the past and you are the one who has to look at them all the time.
Kate's pic is so cute. I can't wait to see the other pics of her! She is so photogenic.

Glad you decided not to paint the wood..
I would probably go with the 3 becuase I like LIGHT.. I LOVE my windows and doors open so the true sunlight comes into the house..
    Have a WONDERFUL Sunday.
    Hugs..
    Love ya girly..

I have 3 inch shutters and am very happy.:)

  7. I say paint the wood and get a color on the walls. Also go with the bigger shutters - they do let in more light! Just my opinion of course!

  8. I am so not ready for all the Christmas decor. It is way to early, I was out shopping today and couldn't help but notice all the things already out on the shelves....ugh!

Kates picture is adorable...looking at that you would never know what happened right before the photo shoot!

    Lisa

PS..I would stay 2 1/2 inches on the shutters

  9. I think you did get great advice about painting the bookcases :)

I love Kate's picture - the outfit she ended up wearing is beautiful.

I have the 3.5 inch shutters on this house, they not only let in a lot of light but I really like the way we are able to enjoy our beautiful gardens from inside. Our last house had the 2.5 inch shutters and I liked them too. Good Luck with that decision and I love hearing all the great advice you get!

  10. I completely agree with you on the Christmas decorations -- it is way too early!

I love the picture of Kate. I hope you can post more!

  11. I noticed the garlands going up at Macy's this week. Very annoying! Soon they can just leave them up year round instead of inching the date up and up. Kate's picture turned out great! You must be thrilled.

  12. I'm with you on the Christmas decor. It just stresses me out when it's this early. Love the pic of Kate, I know you can't wait to see them all!!

I have no clue on the shutters. I don't think I've ever seen 3 1/2". Either one will look great.

  13. Oh my goodness! Is she not the most precious! I LOVE the picture & hope that you share more!

Notice I have not commented on the decorating. I will admit that I have not decorating talent what-so-ever. I will leave that advice to our other blogging experts!

    Have a great Sunday!

  16. Wow -- yes, it is very early for Christmas decorations! And aren't you in a warm area where you don't need to get stuff up before cold weather?? Need to enjoy Halloween first!

Great sneak peek of Kate -- she looks adorable!

  17. The photo of Kate is very pretty! I would go with the shutters that would give more natural light and a better view.

  18. What a darling photo!!!

And I agree on the decorations...a department store near my office put up their Christmas section the day after Labor Day!

  19. I totally agree with you about the decorations...way too early! I was at the mall last night and Urban Outfitters had an entire corner of decorations, etc for sale. I did a double take!

As for the plantation shutters, I would go with 3 1/2. Your windows are probably larger because it is a new home and you will still get the look of shutters you like with more light. Do you have a friend with 3 1/2" shutters that you can look at?

We are considering a remodel and I am looking forward to using shutters as part of the new master bath and bedroom. Since it's the front of the house, do I need to use the shutters in every window on that floor of that house for a consistent look?

Again...good luck. These decisions are fun but can be so overwhelming when deciding lots of things at the same time.

  20. go with the traditional--I think the wider ones work better in a more contemporary home or a house you would see in CA or FL.

  22. Sorry...I am still reeling from the fact that you have white/ivory in a house with three kids!!!

I know it is only 2 months until Christmas but I love Halloween and Thanksgiving so much that I am not in a rush : )

  23. I know what you mean about the early Christmas decorations, I remember as a young child/teenager Christmas decorations never went up until usually a few weeks before Thanksgiving, now we can barely get through back to school and out come the Christmas decorations. We live in such a fast paced society, no wonder everyone is so worn out, tired and constantly busy. We as a society need to step back and relax!!! Take time to soak all of it in, not run by and see what the next thing is. Kate's picture is absolutely beautiful!! Can't wait to see them all.

  24. All the stores here have their Christmas decorations up, too. UGH! I usually like to get past Thanksgiving before even thinking about Christmas.

  25. We have shutter's in all 5 bedrooms and our master bathroom. I used the 3 1/2 in the bigger rooms and the 2 1/2 in our bathroom because it was a smaller room. I love the 3 1/2. I am very happy with them. Our bedroom and sitting area is good size (6 windows) the 3 1/2 look very nice. The kids rooms are all good size so the 3 1/2 looks nice..if I would of put 3 1/2 in the master bath I think it would of been too bulky for such a small area...I hope I helped a little.

  26. in germany there is also already winter/christmas stuff out, but for them it is no big deal, but when i go out shopping with desi he asks "mommy where is the halloween stuff? and thanksgiving." We celebrate these, but no one else here does (obviously). I wish the stores would pay more attention to fall.

I know nothing about shutters except that i think they are REALLY pretty.

The picture of Kate is soooooo cute. I love those pants.

  27. Oh just look at your beautiful little Kate!

  28. I have to agree that the decorations in October take a bit away from the December celebration- let us enjoy one holiday before you are decorating for the next! I have had both size shutters and I like them both. What I do like about the 3 1/2 is that they do let in a little more light - just my 2 cents. Kate's picture is so cute!
