We are okay

Saturday, September 13, 2008
Yesterday morning, we made a quick decision to evacuate Houston.  One whole side of our corporate apartment is comprised of windows and they looked paper thin, so Dave and I were concerned about them blowing out.  Also, the kids have had so much to deal with we did not want them to be afraid and huddled up in an interior closet all night.  My good buddy, Diana called us and she was on the phone trying to find us some people to stay with in either San Antonio or Austin. Thank you so much Di!  You are a faithful and true friend.

As we grabbed a few things and got on the road, my dear friend Tessa was on the internet in Virginia trying to find us a hotel room somewhere that would take our family and Scout.  So we drove west for two hours (with virtually no traffic) even though we had no idea where we were going to stay.  Finally, about an hour from our planned destination, Tessa found us a room (YEAH!). Tessa REALLY worked hard.  She convinced a place that does not take pets to allow us to bring Scout.  I will never forget that Tessa. Thank you!!!

Another friend from Virginia (who we did not even know that well) had recently moved to San Antonio and offered to let us stay with them.  They moved around the same time as we did AND they just welcomed a brand new baby into their family.  I thought they had enough on their plate but I am forever grateful for their kindness.   Thank you VS family!

So, I am sitting in the lobby of a conference in center in San Antonio with tears in my eyes from all of the incredible e-mails and comments and prayers from family and friends.  Thank you for your kindness. We don't have a plan but reports indicate that Houston might be without power for a long time. So, we might try to stay out of town until the power is back.  We have no idea if we have windows in our apartment or not.  Luckily, we have connected with a blog buddy here and had dinner with them last night. She was so kind and welcoming to our family and I am smitten with her adorable, articulate and brilliant daughter!!!!

Our hearts go out to everyone who suffered loss of life or property during this horrible storm. I am especially praying for the family of a 10 year old boy who was struck by a tree branch and died. I cannot imagine their pain.

  3. Great to hear that you are all well and that you decided to evacuate!!! I have tears in my eyes reading your post. I have been watching CNN and the weather channel last night and this AM. They have shown a lot of debris and blown out windows in dowtown Houston. I pray for everybody that lost someone dear or their house.
Good luck in the next couple of days!

  13. Thank goodness! With all that you have going on, thank you for posting to let us know you are ok. I was worried about your family when the news coverage this morning went on & on about the possibility of broken glass in the tall buildings. I will keep you in my prayers as you navigate where to go from here...it sounds like you have a lot of good friends lending a helping hand. And I certainly pray for anyone who remained in the area.

Take care & I hope the kids are hanging in there on this adventure!

  14. Dear Kim - I have been thinking about you constantly lately. Thank goodness you are all safe! Please give Harry a hug from me and tell him that I KNOW he'll be just fine in his new school - it just takes a little adjustment time. I miss him and his sweet freckles and his kind heart every day. Keep your head up - I know the move has been difficult on everyone but your family is so full of love that you'll be just fine. :) Give everyone my love and know I'm thinking of you... MISS YOU ALL! Love, Miss Kristi. :)

  18. So glad to read that you're ok and in a safe place.

My in-laws moved to Houston last week, and were securing their new home the same day the moving truck was unloading their furniture. They are staying it out, of course have no electricity, but are OK.

  19. Ahh, the kindness of friends. So glad that you all are out safely, but honestly, shaking my head for you having yet another unplanned adventure. Glad Scout is there with you and trying not to think about the reality of all of you in even less space. Hope today gets you closer to your ultimate destination.

  20. Kim, I thought about you all last night watching the coverage. I am so glad you all went to San Antonio. At least you are in a fun city with great food and interesting sites...so it can become fun for the kids. Be sure to check out the Alamo, the kids will study about it in Texas History. Here in Dallas, the wind and rains have just started..looks like it will track east of us...so only expecting winds of around 45 and 2-4" of rain.
    Glad you guys are safe.
    Keep us posted.
    Enjoy your little "vacation"!

San Antonio is a nice place to "camp out " for a while. I think I would wait for the electricity before I would venture back to Houston. We will be praying for your safe journey home.

  76. Your family has been in my thoughts and prayers. I'm so glad that you are all safe, though I'm sure it hasn't been easy... another adventure to be sure (just what you needed!)
Every time I call my mother to complain about the latest crazy thing going on in our lives (usually much less serious than a hurricane!), she reminds me to take stock - my family is healthy, everyone is safe, we have each other, etc... I then remember that it is our difficulties (and getting through them) that best demonstrate God's strength, love and grace.
Hugs to you and your family. Stay safe.

  104. I live here in San Antonio and have followed your blog since right before you brought Kate home. If you need anything, please give me a call or email. Just want you to know that you have a friend here in town.

  109. Your family is in my prayers. I grew up in Houston (and now live in another Texas city) and have many friends and family that had to evacuate.

On another note, I hope you grow to enjoy Houston. I lived there for 18 years (until I left for college) and now live elsewhere. I lived in a fantastic neighborhood with amazing public schools. Once you are settled in a house, and the kids are settled in school, I am confident that you will meet wonderful friends!
