Grandma's Christmas Cookies

Wednesday, December 19, 2007

Last week I needed cookies for a cookie exchange. We don't make or eat cookies much around here because my kids are allergic to flour. Prior to knowing about their allergy, we used to make my grandmother's delicious butter cookies every year. My Mom made them every Christmas when I was growing up and the smell of the dough makes me feel like a little girl again. We have not made them for a year or two because we are not supposed to eat them. This year, we threw caution to the wind and made them. They have a pound of butter and a pound of Crisco so they are not healthy but they are SO yummy. They melt in your mouth.

I had envisioned our Christmas cookie making to be festive and fun and wonderful. Not so much...I was exhausted, Kate was whiny, the boys were fighting and Dave wanted no parts of it all. We had fun in the end but it was not the Norman Rockwell moment I had thought it would be. I guess that is the fun of life.

  1. I just have to crack up because we have those moments too! I think it is going to be so special and sweet and then the girls are whinig or crying and Tripp is well saying "naughty words".

  3. Thank you so much for sharing your cookie baking story... the beginning made me smile... the baking experience gave me hope. I am sorry it wasn't what you had anticipated it to be but I can't tell you how much it helps to know that I am not the only one. I have these thoughts of grandure about cooking and baking with my kids. We do have good, fleeting moments but I usually end up (or even start out) GRUMPY. lol I just get so frustrated when they don't listen to me! Thank you for sharing Kim. Oh, how I long to be like a Norman Rockwell painting... but we definately are a little spicer than that!

  4. I plan on making cut-out sugar cookies with the kids tonight (while daddys at his work party) ~ I am also envisioning a nice, cute night with the kids....but, in reality we know what will happen :) And we still go ahead and do it!!

  5. I am left with the flat tire often also. I think a really cool thing that I envisioned in my mind will be met with warm reception and that it will play out like a Norman Rockwell picture. That is rarely the case. Most of the time it is the boys fighting that starts things off on a bad note and then we get irritated and it degrades from there. Glad to see I am not alone with this :)

  6. I just had to laugh...I looked at the pictures before I read the post and thought "wow, they are the picture perfect family...Martha Stewart has nothin' on her!" I'm glad to hear you're kinda normal like the rest of us...
(I always tell my sister when we're doing something "special" with the kids and things aren't going exactly the way we'd like them to that "I'll wave my blog wand and make it all look magical!"
hehe Merry Christmas to you and your BEAUTIFUL family!

  7. Oh the Christmas fun!! The pictures still are darling. We did cut out cookies and tonight we are planning on making a lot of treats. I hope it is fun and I'm not pulling my hair out by the end. Where did you get Kate's apron. I ordered the ones from Pottery Barn Kids for my girls but wasn't happy with the quality when I got them. I'm on the hunt for next year.

  10. OK - Now I am laughing!!! I just saw the pics, but not the post below before I commented.. (No coffee yet!) Anyway, you are not alone. I can't tell you how many times my expectations have been let's just say "not met" with my kids! Remember my Christmas dress moment with Ainsley? Not a lot of Norman Rockwell moments here either in the kitchen! But, so fun to journal no matter what the days with our amazing kids bring us!
    Hugs,
    Me
