what a week...

Sunday, January 22, 2012
I know people have been checking in for an update on Harry's genetics appointment and I really appreciate the emails and prayers.  I just have not had the time or energy to write it all out.   And we did not get much new information to share anyway. It has been quite a week...Last week I got stuck (as many people in our city did) in severe flash flooding.  There were cars quickly drowned in water.  Literally, I saw a car floating down the street. I pulled over for a few minutes in the heavy rain and then all the roads were completely flooded in minutes  I was stuck at Old Navy and Target for hours!   At one point, I was in Target in the pitch black when all the power went out.  It was kinda scary.  I could not get home for 5 hours and I had to go through some high water. As a result of that and some other things,  I had some big car repairs this week.  Then we had Harry's appt. (which I just have not had the time/energy to compose my thoughts on yet but will very soon).  I am also doing a cleanse for my health which has been good but somewhat challenging too. And finally, Will got hurt at a trampoline party place and ended up with 11 stitches in his gorgeous face!   He is okay.  His jaw is kind of swollen and sore but he is fine.  He is not allowed to do swim team for a little while though.  I guess we have to keep the stitches dry.  I know it is vain but I am very concerned about the scarring.  Any suggestions to minimize that?

  Here are some quick snapshots.

So, needless to say-- I am a little behind in getting things done around the house.  I am going to work through my to do list today and I will try to post  an update on Harry within a day or two.  I also need to prepare for tomorrow. I am going into Kate's class to do a Chinese New Year lesson/activity.  So fun!  Happy Sunday!

  1. Vitamin E capsules are great for scarring. Pierce them with a pin / nail scissors, squeeze out the oil and gently massage in. It is quite a sticky texture but works so well!

  4. I've been using something called ScarGuard on a few scars...it's like a little bottle of clear nail polish, you paint it on the scar and it contains a triple whammy of silicone, vitamin e, and cortisone. A plastic surgeon told me it's the best! So far, good results.

  5. Hi KIm, Like Flyss said Vitamin E or any nonscarring salve is great. Just make sure to keep it moist with the salve. Don't let it scab or dry out. Should be fine. Thoughts are with you!

  6. Hi Kim,

I had some squamous skin cancer cells removed from my face, a few years ago. It required about 16 stitches and looked really bad right after the surgery. I used mederma salve that was recommended by the surgeon and can be purchased at the drug store. My scars are hardly visible, people never see it unless I point it out.

Don't blame you for being concerned.

  7. Oh KIm .. wow!! What a week is right! I can not imagine being stuck in Target for 5 hours .. but then again, much better than Walmart! ;)
ALL 3 of my boys (and husband) have have numerous sets of facial stitches in the past years. A few were done by a plastic surgeon, but most in the er .. the best advice I received is once the stitches are out - always use sun screen on the scar to prevent it from darkening. Not so easy though with active, sports -playing boys. Scarguard was recommended too.
Hoping and praying for a better week ahead.. and continued prayers for Harry.

  8. Vitamin E is terrific, but they also sell remedies at the drug store that came highly recommended by a plastic surgeon (I forget the name). He'll be just fine - and still as handsome!

  9. I'm sorry you have so much going on! When it rains, it pours. I am eager to hear about your cleanse, as I'm looking for a good one to get back on track. I've been working too much, and my daddy recently passed away so my eating habits are completely out of whack! Hang in there!

  10. My dermatologist recommends Bio-oil and Mederma for scars. Both are available at W@lgreens and must be used consistantly to work.

I have also been told that Neosporin applied over a healing wound can help with scarring, too. I think that "youth" is on his side. Darn those trampolines!

  11. My boyfriend has a small scar where wills is (golf club to the chin while playing golf in high school.
You can barely see it with his facial hair stubbles. He calls it his battle scar (tough golfer ya know...lol) but I think we all have them at some point.
It seems under his chin so I wouldn't worry too much.
I hope he's not in a lot of pain!

  12. I got stitches twice above my eye. Both from playing basketball and about 4 years apart. I used Palmer's Cocoa Butter with Vitamin E both times (and applied it liberally) -- and have no scars from either incident :)

  13. I had stitches in almost the exact same spot back in September. I had a few internal stitches and then 6-7 external. Mine stayed in for just over a week. One tip I have for him is to keep it covered in Neosporin ointment. It's actually not bad to let them get wet after about 3 or 4 days and it will HELP with the scarring to keep the skin moisturized. The ointment will help keep it moist while it's healing so it doesn't turn into a big dried out spot. It is also a lifesaver come day 6-8 when it starts to get really itchy! I put a little ointment on it and it took the itch away. Right after I got them removed, I gently rubbed a little vitamin E on the spot. Any little dried bits will flake off themselves. For several days following that I would rub vitamin E on the spot (several times a day). Gently massaging the spot will prevent scar tissue from forming.

  15. So sorry about your rough week! I've used Mederma with good results, but somehow guys pull off scars better than women do-I think it makes them look more manly or something. ;)

  16. Sorry to hear about your bad week! I have had numerous surgeries on my face for skin cancers on my nose and have finally found the most amazing dermatologist who not only corrected my nose where the previous op had been but did other amazing removals of a skin cancer on my head which you cannot see. The plastic surgeon who I had originally gone to said there wasnt much else he could do but this woman said without me even asking that she could improve my scar!! Anyway she recommends bio-oil too and I applied it night and day with fantastic results once the stitches were out. I believe this oil is really worth purchasing. I agree with the previous comment you need to purchase 30 plus sunscreen for face which all the kids should be wearing and hats etc and sunsmart clothes on the beach! Hope this doesnt sound like a lecture but after being a kid growing up where the sun can be burning hot at 40 degrees I learnt my lesson the hard way! In Australia we are all going with the slogan SLIP, SLOP, SLAP- slip on a sunshirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat!!

  18. Mederma for Kids....wait until the stitches come out and put on twice a day. The scar will be gone before you know it! Hope he gets to feeling better :-)

  19. Oh my! What a week you've had! 2 of mine had to get stitches this past year and the only thing our doctor said was to use mederma. Praying for you!

  22. I recently had my thyroid removed and my surgeon suggested vitamin E which I religiously put on every night for 6 weeks. Pierce the capsule and squeeze on the scar. My scar looks great at this time. Good luck!

  23. glad you're all ok!

when cooper split his head open, people always said, "scars make boys look tough, he'll be fine". i was mortified- i didn't want my baby to look tough!!

we used mederma religiously- they make a formula for kids that's purple when you put it on- and it helped a lot.

    hang in there- sending hugs.

  24. You know I am with Melissa on I would rather be stuck at Target than Wal*Mart!! :) Good grief girl, I thought my week was crazy! So sorry about Will... But, based on the location, and some great advice here, I bet it will heal beautifully!!!! I will have to hear the details of the "trampoline party" later.. OUCH!

Have fun celebrating with Kate's class!!! Gung Hay Fat Choy!

    Love,

  25. Oh..so much going on. The flooding sounds scary; I'm sorry about your car but I'm glad that you are all okay!!!

Hope Harry is doing well and am sorry about what happened to Will. Matt, my oldest son, had a terrible accident to his face when was 4.5. I was so upset...just like you. He needed a plastic surgeon to do the stitches as it as the cut was big and deep and jagged. They refused to tell me how many stitches they used, just said "a lot, too many to count"....yikes. It has healed fine and I don't really notice it now. They only left the stitches in for 4 days (well, the ones in the top layers of the skin at least) to minimize scarring. They told us that was most important in terms of reducing scarring (I have no idea if that is true, but thought I'd share what we were told by the plastic surgeon).

Hope you have an easier week this week! Happy New Year!

  26. I am so sorry that your week was like this. Scary that Will cut himself at a trampoline party. Thank God it wasn't a broken bone. Trampolines, while fun, scare me. Good luck!
Hope to hear more about your cleanse!!!
    Good luck in Kate's class.

  27. Hi Kim visiting a few fave blogs before the workers start knocking! What a crazy week you have had, so scary about the flash floods, I saw them once and it was like an out of body experience, I thoght those things only happened on the weather channel! With 3 boys we have seen many stitches in our day, he is such a handsome boy and as many people told me "they add character to an already handsome face".....good luck with everything and cheers to smoother calmer days ahead.

  28. Oh dear that flooding sounds terrible! I'm so thankful that you are okay:)

Poor Will:( That looks painful. Praying for Harry and his testing!!!!

  29. So sorry to hear about the flooding-- that sounds terrifying!

I am totally accident prone and actually have a scar in the exact place that Will got stitches. My parents were so worried about scarring that they had a plastic surgeon stitch it up. You can barely tell that I have a scar there now.

My best piece of advice is neosporin all of the time and if he is out in the sun at all, a heavy duty SPF. I've also heard if you get vitamin E and break the pill open and put the mixture on the scar, it will help, but I've really seen no difference between that and neosporin.

    Happy Healing!

  30. The Tongginator had a very pronounced scar on her chin when we first met her. I am sure that the many suggestions listed here all work. We happened to use Mederma, and that worked great for the Tongginator.

Oh, and I know what you mean about people asking for updates and having little to report. I know we are so not dealing with things on the level that your family is, but it's slow going with the testing, all the same. People ask for updates every week, and every week I have to say that right now we still have two months of daily glucose testing before they move on to the next round of tests.
