How's the diet going, you ask?

Monday, May 31, 2010

Sidenote:I have received some comments and e-mails suggesting other diets or a second opinion. This diet is not for weight loss (although most people DO lose weight on it). It is not a fad diet. It is a medical diet designed to eradicate a very specific problem that was diagnosed with extensive blood work. It is killing off bad stuff in my body that likely occurred from too many antibiotics over the past few years. (I had pneumonia (twice), sinus infections, strep, salmonella). It is normal to feel bad on this diet as there is die-off of candida in my body. I sincerely appreciate the kind suggestions but I must finish this diet:) I am sure when it is all over, I will feel much better and be much healthier. I just need to complain while I am doing it:)

I thought I would do weekly updates (for my own memory sake) and because several people have e-mailed or commented regarding their interest. I have been eating completely sugar and yeast free for 3 weeks now. That means not one drop of alcohol, not one crumb of any type of bread, cracker, cake, cookie or chip (even gluten free). Not one piece of fruit. Not one drop of vinegar or butter or milk. No mayonnaise, mustard or ketchup. No tabasco or salsa and chips. No cheese. I LOATHE this diet. I really, truly despise it.

I mentioned last week that I felt good but my skin was bad. Well, this week, my skin got worse (but is finally getting better.) And I did not feel well. I had headaches and grumps and slight flu like symptoms which is likely due to the candida medication I began this week. With this eating plan, you starve the candida for 2 weeks then take anti-candida meds for several weeks. All of this is normal but not pleasant.

At one point last week, I thought to myself ....you know if I lose that 5-10 lbs and my skin looks great and I feel energized and healthy...maybe I will continue eating this way for longer. Well, all I can say is the lack of food, chocolate and wine must have made me delusional because I cannot wait to go back to normal eating. This is SO hard. Giving up shopping for 6 weeks for Lent was a piece of cake compared to this! I eat gluten free anyway and pretty healthy but this is so much harder. There is so little I can eat. I do think I have lost some weight though (we don't own a scale, never have~long story).

I do know that I am blessed to have food. And I am blessed to have access to excellent medical care that has guided me to this temporary eating plan. But good Lord...I cannot wait to eat like a normal human being again. I know I should not complain. But you see, I am a foodie. I love food. I am cooking all of this stuff for my family and I cannot eat it. It stinks. I hope I make it. I have 3 more weeks to go. Then I can gradually add in normal food. I might "gradually" add in a big chocolate cupcake on June 21st!

And yes, I complain about this eating plan to my family every. single. day. I am weak.

We had friends over for dinner tonight and Dave made this beautiful blueberry pie (at my suggestion~no one else should suffer just because of my diet). It was tough...

Look at that homemade, buttery, flaky crust...sigh.

Thanks for the suggestions about summer. They were great. If you did not read my last post, please do and add your suggestions. Colleen, I would end everyday with a glass of wine if I could but I can't!!!

  1. Oh, I'm so sorry about your adrenal fatigue diet. I rely so much on little 'pick me up' foods....I don't know what I would do! I admire your discipline!!

    P.S. that pie looks AWESOME!

  2. Your will power and self discipline is out of this world. This better work! John is on a strict diet too and gets grouchy at night. And it has only been 6 days. I tried your quinoa today and really liked it, very filling, but I added vanilla soy milk so Bailey could have some bites. That pie looks amazing! I am praying for you Kim!!!! Jeez.

  6. Oh good lord my friend....that makes my gluten free diet sound like pure delight and even sounds like I am cheating compared to what you are doing. That list just kept running...doesn't sound like there is much left to eat. I really hope after it ends that you will feel much improvment and certainly hope for your skin to clear(goodness knows that I had perfect skin as a teen and now in my 40's I can't keep my skin clear for a week~yuck)
That pie looks divine, but I wouldn't be able to eat it either~darn celiac.
Do you have your cupcake date set? Where will that large choc cupcake come from? and what will you drink with it? I am a foodie too and would be dreaming of this date and food experience!! Good luck, and 21 days sounds shorter than 3 weeks in my book:)

  8. I have to wonder how a diet that makes you feel so rotten can possibly be good for you. Maybe it's time for another opinion?

  10. dieting, blah. have you heard of myfooddiary.com. my husband has lost almost 50 ponds doing it and I lost some too. It's all about eating right and knowing what you are eating.

  11. Today I will not complain about my sulfite and sulfate free diet. For just one day. Because what you are going through right now is much, MUCH more difficult than that. My cousin has multiple, severe food allergies... she can barely eat anything at all and is basically stick thin. Your diet right now sounds almost as restrictive as hers.

  12. I know this is rough. I followed this plan under the guidance of a professional for a while after I had been on a lot of antibiotics. My mother-in-law did it as well to alleviate some severe GI issues. Like you, it was only recommended after a lot of tests. And in the end, it helped a lot. I hope it brings you relief too. You will have to ask Dave to make that yummy pie as a big reward when you are all done! Good luck & hang in there!

  16. That sounds like an incredibly hard diet to follow. It's really a medical plan your following. I bet your "x"ing off every day on your calendar until you're finished. Hang in there...I would be complaining too!

  17. Hang in there. I say that so willingly as I have not suffered through this! YIKES! My hat is off to you Kim. You are looking after you and that is so important.

  18. Hi Kim,

Bless your heart. I can't imagine having to do that diet. Hang in there. You are indeed strong, I would be complaining every second of the day. And by the way, you just might loose your summer time blues once your diet is over. Just a thought. :) I imagine the diet is not helping your mood/perspective on things right now. It certainly wouldn't help mine!

I thought of you tonight when I was in Costco and saw the "Bob Books" that everyone had recommended for Kate. I thought I would let you know that they are there. (At least in the Pacific NW--hoping they'd have them in TX too).

And I also had a question for you, if you have the time to reply. If not, no worries. But I was wondering where you found Kate's white pillow on her bed that is monogrammed in pink? It's exactly what I'm trying to find for my daughter's room. If you have a moment to leave a comment on my blog with the information I'd so appreciate it. Or you can email me at kathy.zeamer@comcast.net. (I'm sure it goes w/o saying, but please don't post my email in the comments. Thanks.:)

Hang in there with the diet. You really can do it. You really are strong, I've read your blog long enough to know that.

    Take care,
    Kathy

  19. Just a word of encouragement. My sister was on a similar diet for lots of symptoms that her holistic doc thought were from candida overgrowth. She made it through the diet and IS A NEW WOMAN AND HAS BEEN FOR ABOUT 10 YEARS NOW. She always delt with acne, fatigue, random weight gain and stomach issues. She doesn't have any of these problems after the diet and a few other supplements. She now eats healthy but with the occasional indugence. Press on! It will be so worth it! Only 3 more weeks ;)

  20. Oh my, this diet is strict and to the point! I'm sure the payoff will be worth the pain ;) Did I miss how long you need to follow these eating habits? My son had to go through something like this a few years ago. Thank you for the posts regarding the informaion ~ we still have to keep an eye out on certain foods for my son.
