The Pumpkin Farm

Saturday, October 11, 2008
Updated:  We have an offer on our house in Virginia. Yeah!  Please pray it all goes well.  Also, they want our washer and dryer so I need to buy new ones quickly.  We move into our new house on October 24th.  I would really appreciate anyone's insight as to brand and models they love or despise.  I am a laundry gal so I need to love my machines!

Today we actually went to a "pumpkin farm."  It was the first time in my life that I remember ever actually pickng a pumpkin off the vine.  It was hot and the kids (really Kate and Harry) got grumpy.  All in all though we had a nice family day. There are a lot of photos.  I am trying to get back in the groove of taking photos again.  I made myself shoot all of these with my 50mm (no zooming) and most on aperture priority.

I LOVE this one but Kate's face is not completely in focus.  I tried to sharpen it a bit but it did not work that well.

Harry took this one of me picking a pumpkin.  You really had to twist hard to break them from the vines.  I love the curly q's at the top of my pumpkin (see photo below).

This one below is from last year.  Look how much Kate has changed.

I know there are many more photos of Kate.  The boys do not really like me taking their picture (especially Harry).  They are so sick of the camera.  I am sure Kate is too.  She just cannot verbalize it yet. Oh and Kate's dress is from this Etsy shop.  Or read Red's helpful comment below to make one yourself.  Oh, I need to learn to sew!  Thank you, Red!

  10. I LOVE that picture of her in the tunnel. I couldn't see that it was out of focus at all.

I LOVE her dress too! I can't wait to be able to buy things like that!

They have all grown so much in a year. I know all kids do, it is just surprising when you see pictures back to back like that. Same with mine.

Hope things are better. Any word on the house?

  16. If anyone wants to make Kate's dress, it's called a Pillow case dress and there are free tutorials online to teach you.
It's basically a rectangle (pillow case) then you run the ribbon through the top etc..

A sleeved version, also at Etsy, is called a peasant top/dress.
Same principle, easy squares then elastic or ribbon ran through the top.
    (youcanmakehtis.com has the pattern)

Hope it was ok to add this for the people drooling over Kates dress :D

PS I LOVE that tunnel pic of Kate.
    Your a great photographer :D

  18. Cute photos! I hate my Fisher and Paykel washer for many reasons, plus it's hard to find a repairman and really, really expensive to do the repairs. I'm not sure what I'll get when I buy a new one, but it will probably be the high end of one of the garden-variety brands--GE, Maytag, etc.

  19. These are amazing photos!! Kate's dress is adorable.

We have Whirlpool duet washer/dryer and I have to say I am NOT impressed. Especially since they were so darn expensive!! They are made to handle big loads, but they don't do well with big loads in my opinion. The clothes don't come out as clean as they should, so I end up doing lots of small loads to make sure everything gets really clean. Good luck! Can't wait for you to move into the new house. :)

  20. We are headed out today to go apple picking. You have inspired me to take my camera and try a few of your tricks! I love the photos of your beautiful family! And Kate's dress...oh so cute!

Sorry...I'm no help on the washer/dryer. Would love to hear what you end up with though.

Also, so happy about the house offer!

  21. First off, I'm so happy for your family that you will be in your new home soon!
    Love all the photos!
    Looooooove Kate's dress!
I am often asked why I have so many more phots taken of Mia and not the boys - exactly: they do not want too many taken and I can just follow Mia around and snap away without her saying "no more!" - we'll see how long that lasts!

  22. What gorgeous photos, Kim!! Love them all!!! The one of Will losing his hat is great. :) I had to laugh... we did the pumpkin patch yesterday and it ended in disaster... because it was hot and Grant was tired & grumpy!!! I am glad we're not the only family that had crabby kids at the pumpkin patch. :)

Oh, and I have a Whirlpool Duet set and I love them!!!

  23. The pictures are wonderful! I need a tutorial on the photography stuff. I am auto all the way!

I love Kate's dress so cute! It's funnny to be wearing a sleeveless dress for Halloween, huh? I never can get the Halloween costumes I really want for Landree, but it's too hot for so many of them. Got to love the south!

My mom just got a front loading washer and dryer and she LOVE THEM! I'll ask the brand. They will wash big loads, adjust to the amont of water they need automatically and the dryer (even thought I know you don't use your dryer a lot) is very efficent. It takes the same amount of time as a wash load.

  24. Kim,

Our Maytag washer finally died after many years of good service. I really couldn't decide on which one to replace it with (Maytag pretty much has a TERRIBLE track record now) because as soon as I thought I had decided, I read horrible things about it. I also learned that Whirlpool is pretty much make most washers these days (including Sears and Maytags). We ended up going with the LG Tromm front loader and dryer with the traditional back panel controls; the back panel control model had one of the highest ratings on Consumer Reports at that time. That said, I have had them a year and have been pretty well satisfied. You must use HE detergent, and like someone else said, I do not pack it to the brim (for best results). Also, I leave the washer door open at night to help prevent any "odors" from occurring; ALL front loaders have some issues with the water completely draining from around the door (at least my research showed this). This drainage problem was improved from the original models and probably has even been improved upon since we got ours in July 2007.

I hope this helps! (Epinions.com let me see what others thought about what they bought.)

I'm excited that you and your family will soon be in your new home!

    Happy days,
    Meg

  26. Looks like such a great family day!!
I love all the shots. And her dress! I also feel a little bad about having so many of Bailey but its like you said B2 won't let me take their photo much less POST them. The boys look like they ahve changed alot too.

I can totally reklate to the poster post! My best friend Carrie absolutely MADE me allow posters and now its been five years, they have taken over Barrington's room. I hate them every time I go in, still! They have digressed to pages ripped out of surf magazines. I wish you luck on keeping it under control! haha

Excited about your house!! Now maybe it will all smooth out!! You are a lovely family who deserves some peace and smooth sailing!!

  28. Your pics look wonderful.
Sorry there were a few grumps along the way, Jacob can get grumpy sometimes when we are out and about too and especially hot with long lines...
Hey I saw a washing machine on a commercial the other day and you only have to add detergent and softener 2x a year, I thought that sounded wonderful:)
    It was an electrolux.

  29. Wow, your pictures looks great. The kids look adorable all dressed for halloween.

I just bought a bunch of vintage pillowcases in Canton to make pillowcase dresses. Hope they turn out as cute as Kate's.

By the way I have the Whirlpool Duet frontloaders and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them. They have changed the way I feel about laundry, and they use so much less water and energy to dry. They come in great colors too.

  30. Congrats on the house! I hope that it happens! That would be wonderful :D

Looks like fun at the pumpkin patch - we are going next week, did the apple orchard this week! It was a blast. Kate dress is adorable - as always :D

  32. I've never been to a patch like that, very cool. We have no exciting places for pumpkin patch picking, all of our pumpkins are shipped in. =0( Love Kate's dress for the event!

We have the Whirlpool duet and it holds a ton.

Is that the Neverfull bag next to you? You're the laundry gal and I'm the bag gal. ;0)

  34. Kim,

I love the pics from teh pumpkin farm. We use to take the kids to a pumpkin farm outside of Katy and we had os much fun..but it was always sooo hot.

We bought the Whirlpool Duet front loading washer and dryer two months and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE them!!! They hold so much stuff and are engergy efficent. We bought the top model and there are tons of options of ways to wash and dry clothes. You have to use HE detergent but it takes very little so it lasts quite a while. One negative is that front loaders can get an odor but they suggest putting a cleaning tablet in them once a month to get rid of odors. I did it for the first time last night and it worked wonderfully to get rid of the odor. These washers/dryers have made me actually ENJOY doing laundry. Good luck...and I am so glad ot hear that the house situation is working out, both selling and buying.

  36. Kimber - The photos are gorgeous! I'm glad things are moving on your house in VA (actually I was hoping you would just give it to me:). I meant to comment on your God post the other day... you are so right...the rain falls on the righteous and the unrighteous, but He is always there to see us through the storm! Your faith continues to inspire me and I am so impressed with your desire to share it so boldly with others. OK - onto washing machines. We just bought a High Efficiency washer and dryer set from LG and I LOVE IT. It cleans so well, great on stains and gentle on clothes. We also really liked the Whirpool model -- it had a few more features and was a bit more expensive. Love ya - Mar

  40. LOVE to see those precious smiles... on momma's face, too :)

About the washer/dryer, I recommend an LG frontloader. We were waiting for ours to come and got impatient so we bought the GE frontloader and HATE it... it's the worst product I've ever bought, breaks all the time.

Congrats on the offer, sounds like everything is all falling into place!

  47. Kim,

What a precious dress! Looks like you all had a great time. I have a LG front loader washer/dryer and for the most part am happy with it. It is extremely quiet, which is a nice feature. I have heard ALOT of great things about the new GE front loader washer/dryer. Please keep us posted on what you end up getting! Good Luck- great news about the VA house.

  48. What wonderful pictures of your fun day! I can't believe the change in all of your kiddos over the last year. They are just so precious. We are going to the pumpkin patch on Wed but the pumpkins are already cut off the vine. I'm with you those curly q's are too cute.
I have no idea about W/D. I do know that my Mom has a frontloader and loves it. I plan on getting a new set when we move.
Congrats on the house. I bet everything will start falling into place.

  49. Loved the pictures from the pumpkin patch. Everyone's orange shirt (and Kate's cute dress) looked so festive.

Great news on both houses. I hope that's a sign that things are starting to fall into place in your new home.

I bought a Whirlpool Duet front-loading washer and dryer several years ago. I have been very happy with them. The front-loading washer spins the clothes so well that they need much less time in the dryer.

I thought your last post was Hilarious! I am the SAME way!! NO posters, or wall art( that they have created) on their walls! NEVER..
Two weeks ago, I noticed (at the end of the day) that someone had hung 2 pic. in their room over their bed. ???
I went to pull it down.. yeah, it was stuck.. WITH PURPLE STICK GLUE! ( which I thought I had stored safely away)... ARGH!!!
    Kids, gotta love them!

  58. We'll be in the market for a new washer/dryer set in the next year or so (still repairable!) and asked our repair guy what brand front loaders he recommended. He highly recommended Whirlp@@l. I also asked about molding in the front loaders and he said to leave any washer open for a while after use, doesn't matter what brand, to help prevent mold. Then went to a couple stores to price them, and one store recommended the LG because there aren't any belts in them, but they are so new, they don't have a track record yet.
    Good luck!
