Our "Hurrication" continues...

Tuesday, September 16, 2008
We returned to Houston today because we were informed that we had power.  We stopped at Wh*le Foods and another supermarket in San Antonio.  We stocked up on water, ice and food. However, we returned to NO POWER! Apparently, this is the worst and largest power outage in Texas history!

Luckily, earlier in the day, my sweet friend Leslie called and said that she had power and to call her if we did not.  So, I immediately called her and we grabbed a few more essentials from our apartment and headed over to her house.  Poor Will has a migraine (he told me he is stressed out) but Kate and Harry are faring well.  I was close to tears as I am sick of all of the transition and uncertainty in our life.  However, I quickly said a little prayer and reminded myself how very lucky we are.  I am not sure how long we will be without power and how long the kids will be out of school.  We are taking everything one day at a time.  Houston looks really bad.  Traffic lights are dangling in the middle of intersections, roofs are ripped off, trees are everywhere.  I really wished we had stayed longer in San Antonio.  If our power is going to be out for a long time (it might be weeks)...we will head to Virginia for a while.  I don't even have the heart to take photos.  It all is very sad.

Thank you again for all of the kind comments.  They have lifted my spirits.

  2. Oh Kim, Bless your hearts! I cannot even imagine how difficult all of this is on you guys. I am such a creature of habit and need routine and structure and I would be like Will (stressed).

I just want you to know how much I admire you and your spirit. You are really handling all of this so well.

Please know that many people are lifting you guys up in prayer and that good things are just around the corner for you all!

    Hugs!

  4. Kim,

So sorry to hear that your return "home" didn't go as planned. I know there is a lot to be thankful for, but sometimes that doesn't make it easier, especially when you're trying to hold it together for the whole family. You and Dave take care of each other, okay?

If you need to get away again Dallas is not too far! You could ever stay at Great Wolf Lodge for the children. We have a great zoo and museum, loads of amazing restaurants, hotels, etc. Good luck and keep us updated on things.

  12. Kim, I'm sorry to hear about your continuing trials! I've been checking your blog daily to find out how your family is doing and hoped to hear better news today. It sounds as if your apartment survived the storm intact so that is something to be thankful for.

  21. I am praying this verse for a friend and I am going to pray it for you today too!

    Psalm 27:13-14
I would have despaired unless I had believed I would see the goodness of the LORD... Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage.

I am also praying Will will feel better today. Wish there was more I could do for you all!!!

    In Christ's Love,
    Sharon

  29. I'm sorry things are so upside down. This is just a stepping stone to better things. There was a praying mantis on my patio today, so you've got two more sending prayers for you! Keep the faith.

  30. Oh Kim! I am so sorry. I remermber the feeling of 'no floor' while moving and I remrember needing to 'get out of it' after the two hurricanes I went through on the NC coast yrs ago and went to my parents until things got back to normal. I hope you all can just get out of it. But you are doing the right thing to just stay in touch with God and His plans for you. It seems like He is guiding and interacting with the details of your life if you look closely. It all seems to coincidental, all these things lining up. Just rest in His presence and keep taking it one step at a time as you said. It will all be worth it in the end. You never know what He thinks is something the kids as well as the parents need as life experiences for His plans for the individuals in your family. I was only 6 but remember well the hurricanes living in New Orleans and how my parents handled everything as well as our moves so that when I was faced with them as an adult it was much easier. I am praying and thinking of you. I know there will be great "calm' sunshiny days ahead for you with lots of lovely things to make up for this!!

  32. Kim... continuing the prayers for you and everybody in Houston! Ike roared through KY on Sunday with 75mph winds and our city is still mostly without power (including us)... so I know how stressful it can be! The devastation here is amazing too... who knew a hurricane could be so strong so far north?

Glad to hear that you all are ok! I have been thinking of you! Thank goodness for blackberries!

  33. Oh my, what a wild adventure. My heart goes out to all of you, especially Will...poor guy! I continue to pray for your family & I am so glad you fled Houston. I hope things get back to normal as soon as possible!!!

I have been thinking of you constantly. Sorry I haven't emailed, not sure if you read my blog recently, but my grammy passed away last week. So, I was gone at the funeral and such with family.

I hope that you are fairing OK and that the kiddos are holding up. I am sure this is just really hectic and crazy for them as well. I know that you are being strong for everyone...I am sending you smiles and love via the internet!

    XOXO, Clare

You are an example to us all. Your strength, kindness, and faith shine through the eyes of your family and every word you write.

Praying for you in WI, too - Beth

  57. Oh Kim, I feel your pain in this whole Ike business. We're right outside Houston, 45 minutes from Galveston. We've been gone six days. We returned yesterday because we heard we had power. Minor damage to our home compared to the big picture! Stores are slowly but surely opening. Not much dairy though. Gas is slowly coming back too. Schools are closed until further notice. Hmmmm....THANK GOD we're all safe and together!!!!

  58. Kim I have been following your journey for a while. I enjoy seeing your family blossom. Praying for your family and all the others affected. Stay safe
