What I have read lately

Thursday, October 25, 2018
My apologies for not posting for a week.  I have been battling a serious illness for over a year now.  I was completely better and now I have regressed again.  So, I am trying to post 2/3 times a week.  Keep checking back but please understand If I have not posted, it is due to work and doctors and health stuff.  I plan to post a few recipes next and then another installment in the college application process.

I read a ton. It is one of my favorite things in the world to do.  I am in 3 book clubs and I read all kinds of books.  I also like almost everything I read so I hesitate to write critiques but I'll try here.

This week, I have already read these two books:

As the titles imply, these are about a Southern family of three sisters and their Mom and Grandmom.  They live in a coastal town in Georgia and the story revolves around their relationships and trials and tribulations. These are the first two books in a series of three.  I loved them.  They are light, easy reading and I felt like I knew each of the characters.  I want to be friends with this family in real life.  The characters are likable yet flawed and the story keeps you hooked.  I seriously cannot wait for the third book.  If you need something easy to entertain you, these books are great. I highly recommend them especially if you like beachy, Southern Chick-lit (which I love!).

Now, if you like suspense and mystery, I read this one a few weeks ago.  It was Reese Witherspoon's book club pick a month or two ago. If you liked Gone Girl and those other twisty, turny dark mysteries, this is good.  Sometimes I like them and sometimes they make me too jittery.  I liked this one.  I like to completely mix up the types of books I read so this is completely opposite of the light ones above.  The plot kept me interested and even Dave (who doesn't read much) read it on a long flight and enjoyed it.

I also really enjoyed this book this month.  As you know, I am afraid of flying and I was not sure I could handle this book because there is some of that in there.  But I ultimately really liked it.  It deals with injury, love, recovery, family secrets, strength and redemption.  I read this book in about 2 days.  I enjoyed it a lot.

These next two books are so good.  I read Beartown at least a year ago for one of my bookclubs and I am currently reading the sequel, Us against You (also for bookclub). The author, Fredrik Backman (A Man called Ove) is such a gifted writer.  He takes a long time to set the scene and introduce the reader to the large cast of characters in this novel but once he does, you cannot put it down. You feel like you are living in the town and part of the community.  Beartown deals with a sexual assault in a small hockey town and is very timely given our current political climate.  I read it before the Brett Kavanugh hearings but one of my other bookclubs read it that week and we had quite the lively discussion.  I honestly had no desire to read this book given the description but it draws you in.  I think this author is so gifted at writing three dimensional characters that the reader grows to love.

Another book that dealt with teen issues and community was All we ever wanted.  I like Emily Giffin for her light chick lit books about marriage and motherhood.  However, this one was different in that the subject matter was much more serious.  It takes place in a wealthy suburb of Nashville.  A mother is faced with the possibility that her son (who is headed off to an Ivy league college) has done something horrible.  While the subject matter was heavier than her usual books, I really liked this book.  It is timely as it deals with sexual misconduct and social media.  It deals with all of the pressures that today's teens face.  Having a senior in high school, I could empathize with many of the characters.

I have also ordered several books for Kate from Amazon recently.  I typically read on my iPad but I get her the physical books and that is what she prefers.  I took a chance on this series and she has loved it!  Kate is kind of sick of reading your typical "middle school" books.  She has flown through this 3 book series though.  It is probably on the easy side for her  as it is recommended for 10 and up and grades 5-6.  She is 12 and in 6th grade but she loves them. I love that they have a brave young female as the lead character.

I could go on and on but I am out of time and energy.  Let me know if you like these posts and any of your favorite books in the comments please.  Have a great weekend!!!

a few favorite Amazon finds

Wednesday, October 17, 2018
Being a homebody, I kind of hate shopping out in stores but I love shopping online much to my husband's dismay. I have found some incredible things on Amazon lately and just have time to share a few with you today but will likely make this a regular feature here.

First, I am so glad that scarves are back in style.  I love them and saved many of my silk scarves from 20 years ago.  But I also found a few new ones that I have been wearing non stop.

This one is a beautiful silk square and I have worn it several times already. It was a steal at under $15.

That is a terrible screenshot of me wearing it last week.
This photo also shows the glasses I talk about below.
I should have taken real photos but haven't had time.

Scarf//Jeans// Eyeglasses//Sweater (similar, this years' version)

I have also worn this orange one a few times.  I love it.  It is not silk but looks and feels exactly like it.

I also have it in the most beautiful pale turquoise (series 3 blue) as well as the orange one.  I just feel like a pretty scarf can take a very simple outfit and make it much more chic.  These scarves are under $10 and really add a lot to my existing wardrobe.

Oh and I got these earrings a few weeks ago and love them.  I posted a photo in my Instagram stories and several people wanted to know more about them.  They are lightweight and very stylish. They come in a light color and a darker more traditional tortoise.

People have also asked me about my glasses a lot lately.  I ordered them both on Amazon too and took them to Costco to have my prescription lenses put in.  I have a small face and kind of know the measurements I can get in eyeglasses.  I also knew that Amazon is great about returns, if I did not like these frames.

These are the glasses that I get the most questions/comments about.  I love them.  I have a very, very small face so they are probably slightly large for me (see screenshot above). But I think they would fit most faces.  They seem universally flattering.  I have had mine about a year.

These are my other glasses that I wear everyday.

Mine are the 47/17/138 size. They are light and super comfortable.  I have two pair of this one (readers and distance:)

I plan to do a whole skin care post soon but these masks could not wait.  I have not always been the best at skin care.  But in the last few years, I have really started taking better care of my skin.  I do not think most masks in general are worth the time and money but these really make a difference in my skin.  I use this mask about once every week or two.  The price is great and it come with 10 masks.

Okay, the last thing is a supplement.  I am NOT a medical doctor but these have been awesome for our family. Please check with your doctor before adding any supplements to your routine.

This liquid probiotic  is fabulous. Kate cannot swallow pills/capsules and Harry says most probiotics hurt his stomach.  These drops are completely tasteless and do not upset anyone's stomach.  They can also be used as a spray for your skin for acne.  I love these probiotics and am so glad I found them.

I think I will be posting a recipe I slightly adapted next and then continue the college series.  Have a great day.

fall shoe favorites

Monday, October 8, 2018
When I asked people what they'd like to see me blog about fashion and parenting were the top two requests by an overwhelming margin.  I was kind of surprised at the fashion response but am happy to do some posts on things I like. I have 3 posts planned this week on fashion and the college application process so check back.

This week we should see the beginnings of cooler fall weather here in Houston (finally!) so I thought I'd start with some things I like for Fall.  This summer, I spent some time decluttering (as I do a lot) and I worked on my shoes.  I realized that while trends come and go, I tend to stick with a few classics each season.  I know booties have been all the rage the last few years but they just are not for me.  I am petite and I don't think they're flattering on me even thought they look great on others. But also, I don't think they jibe with the rest of my wardrobe so that is a trend I am skipping.  I feel like if you build a wardrobe of quality classic pieces, you can add in a few trends you like here and there.  There are things I have had in my closet for over 20 years that I still love and still wear.

During my declutter, I realized that I wear a ton of loafers, pointy toe flats and ballet flats in the fall.  I also like boots, just not booties.  When I did my closet clean out, I had a few pairs of loafers that were in bad shape so I knew I needed to replace a few this year. I tend to wear cream, tan and black ones constantly.  So here are a few favorites I found and love.

I wear a lot of cream and winter white and I fell in love with the shoes immediately.

I love this brand.  They make beautiful classic shoes that are comfortable and chic.

This one is currently on sale for half of what they typically run.  I would say they run true to size and do not require breaking in.  I love that the soles have a protective lining because it is rainy and humid here and I always get my leather soles lined so that I don't slip.  This saves me that expense and time.

This shoe is a similar loafer that comes in black, mink (which is the one I have and goes with everything!) and deep wine/brown color. I like the metal bit detail.  It reminds me of the Gucci loafer but at 1/10th of the price and honestly I think these are better quality after trying on both brands. I love this shoe in the Mink patent so much!

I bought these black patent loafers (mine do not have the tassel though) at Marshall's about 2 weeks ago and I LOVE them.  So check your local TJ Maxx and Marshall's but if you cannot find them there, you can order them here with the tassel.  If you prefer a penny loafer instead of the tassel (like mine) you can find them here too for under $40! That's what I paid. They are so comfortable and they are classic but a little edgy because of the sole.  I have worn them about 5/6 times in the last 2 weeks.  I think I will wear these a lot and they will last a long time because of the sole.  Here is a picutre of me in mine.

Sweater (favorite purchase this fall~ I got it in navy and gray but the navy is sold out now) /Pants /Belt Comes in black/brown and navy/orange or navy/cream/ Shoes

When doing my decluttering I also realized that I really needed a navy flat.  I wear navy a lot and have a navy skirt that I rarely wear because I didn't have the right shoe. I have honestly looked for a versatile cute navy flat for a long time and I recently found this one on major sale and ordered it.  It has not arrived yet but I know my size and comfort with Tory Burch so I think it will be great.  The best part is it was 60% off.  I do not think I will wear the detachable ribbon much. But it makes a pretty option with a skirt.

Finally, I love a calf hair or leopard shoe.  I have a few pair from past years so I did not need a new one but these are really cute and versatile and gets excellent reviews.  Mine are all a few years old but I wear them a lot all fall and winter.

I love really well made, classic shoes and I do love a bargain.  All of these are well under $100 except the navy which are just at $100 (regularly $250). I hope you enjoyed seeing these options.

My next post is the first of a 3 part series on the college application process.  I think the series has lots of useful tips and a good timeline too.  I will post other things in between though because I know not everyone is interested in the college application series.  But if you have any children in high school or even 8th grade, it should be a good read. Tell your friends who have high school kids too!

Around here

Saturday, April 18, 2015
This post is one of those all over the place random updates of life in our house right now and it is long.  But these are little things that I want to remember...

I am not one to typically binge watch TV at all.  I don't have big blocks of time between work and home life.  However, last week my sister told me about this show called Married at First Sight.  Four experts look at extensive data and match three couples.  The first time they meet is at their wedding.  They have a wedding, a reception,  honeymoon, move in together and try to make it work. It is absolutely fascinating.

MAFS Cover

I have had my PhD in marriage and family communication for 22 years.  I taught for many years at the college level on gender and communication, relational communication, marriage and family.  Now, I am in private practice helping engaged and married couples navigate the challenges of their relationships.  So, this show is made for me.  I LOVE it.  Season 2 is currently airing but I loved it so much I bought Season 1 on Amazon to watch (Married at First Sight Season 1).  And I watched almost the whole season this week in every spare second I had.

I seriously cannot recommend this show enough if you like relationships like I do.  I absolutely LOVE my job.  I love helping people figure out how to be better partners to one another and this show hi-lights the ups and downs that we all have in marriage.  It focuses on the most important thing though...the commitment to keep doing the WORK.  I see that over and over in my office.  The couples who do the work, make it.  The couples who don't are miserable.  I have said it a million times on this blog but Love is a decision and an action every single day.  And it is interesting to watch that play out on this docu-series as well.

Now I am watching Married at First- The First Year.  These episodes follow the couples from the 6 month though 1 year phase for the couples that stayed together.  It is on demand in some places.

My work is really good.  I try to maintain a pretty small practice so that I can still have time to exercise, meet a friend for lunch once in a while and be involved at the kids' schools.  But it is so hard to find that perfect balance.  Some weeks, I have just a few clients and some weeks I am crazy busy (like this week).  I am really trying to work more because I love it so much but juggling everything part time can be stressful at times.  As many of you know, you often end up feeling like you aren't doing anything as well as you'd like to.  And every time I meet with clients, I am reminded of ways that I can be a better Mom and wife too (which is a good thing).  If you need marriage/parenting/life coaching, feel free to reach out to me (khswales@comcast.net).  I do phone or Skype appointments if you are not in the Houston area.

Will is taking he ACT again today.  It will be the last time he takes it.  He already has a great score but he wanted to take it one more time just to see if he could get another point or two for scholarships. This summer he will take a workshop for writing his college essays and in the Fall he will apply to the colleges of his choice.  I really cannot believe we are at this point in life with him.  The other day, we got the tuition bill for his senior year and there was a cap and gown/gradutaion fee!  I admit that I teared up when I read that.  He turns 18 in June.  My first born son becomes a legal adult.  I know people say it all the time but it really has gone by so fast. I am SO proud of the man he is becoming.

I know a lot of young women without kids or Moms with very young kids read this blog.  Cherish the moments at each and every stage of childhood because they are so fleeting.  Even the tough stages will be ones you look back at with a smile, I promise.

Kate is getting ready to make her first holy communion and she is SO excited.  She really embraces her faith and takes it quite seriously.  A few weeks ago in Sunday school, she learned about Saint Maximilian Kolbe.  He was a Polish man who became a Franciscan priest and gave his life for another man in a Auschwitz.  Kate became so fascinated with his life.  So, when she had to pick an important figure in history to do a report about, she chose him.  Kate attends a public school so her classmates are researching figures like Abe Lincoln, Elvis Presley, Harriet Tubman etc.  But Kate really wanted to do her report on this not very well known Saint (Mother Theresa was her second choice).  I am so grateful for a loving teacher who is encouraging Kate to follow her heart and her faith.  The biography we are reading (together) is WAY above her level of comprehension.  Heck, it is difficult for me and Dave in some parts. But she is really committed to learning as much she can about this incredible Christian man.

stmaximiliankolbe

When I thanked Kate's teacher for being supportive she said she was not surprised at all that Kate chose a Saint.  She said, "Kate is so Catholic. I see it in her everyday the way she acts, they way she answers questions, the way she got so excited when we learned about Mother Theresa."  Her comment made my heart leap with joy because to me your faith is not something you simply believe but it is the way you act toward others.

One more little update on Katie Ru.  This girl is obsessed with crafting.  She makes these little boxes out of cardstock.  I wish I had photos of some of the more unique ones she has made.  In her spare time, she looks up knitting patterns and these box patterns and she crafts and crafts and crafts. She will literally spend an entire Saturday making stuff.  All she wants for her birthday is crafting supplies:) I love the coupons at Hobby Lobby and Michaels:)

Harry is finishing up 8th grade!  He has about a month left of middle school and then graduation.  YEAH!  So far, I think the middle school years are the toughest years of growing up. It is such a difficult time for kids and their parents. Sixth grade was incredibly difficult for Harry (and me) and you could not pay me all the money in the world to do middle school again right now (glad Kate has a few years!)  This year has been great though and I know he has mixed feeling about starting all over at a new school.  I think he is nervous yet excited.  Harry is finishing middle school with straight A's and straight E's for all three years!  And he has taken several advanced classes.  This year he has 10th grade geometry (in 8th grade) and high school Spanish and Journalism.  If he were going to public school, he would be entering with 5-6 high school credits already.

This week he finishes up his lacrosse season at his school too.  He has been a key player all three years. The lacrosse program had lapsed at his middle school and a Dad got it going again 3 years ago--  just as Harry entered middle school. Harry stepped in and started as a team captain and he has been a captain all 3 years.  He is hoping to play high school lacrosse too.

Also, I am not sure if you noticed but Harry and a HUGE growth spurt (easter pics here).  Harry has always been below the 5th percentile in height and weight and he has had health issues too~ I mean his WHOLE life.  Some years he was not even on the charts.  At his check up a few weeks ago, he was in the 11t percentile for weight and the 13th percentile for height.  That is HUGE for him.  His pediatrician (the one who was there on the day he was born) was so happy.  And so were we.

For the last 3 years, Harry and I have volunteered in the school store every Wednesday morning at his middle school  It was an awesome experience. And it is something that just he and I shared.  I cannot put into words how much I am going to miss those Wednesday mornings with him (and the other Mom and son we have worked with for the last year and half).  I am going to get a photo of us together in the next week or two of us in the school store because I really want to always remember those times.

Of course, I don't have photos of the boys because truth be told, they are rarely around these days.  They're always off with friends (which I guess is good).

Okay, that is my long update about me and the peanuts.    I also want to share a discount code with y'all.  I got an email that it is friends and family weekend at Loft.

I have my eye on these...

And finally, don't forget about the Lilly Pulitzer launch tomorrow at Target!  Everything looks so cute!  You can actually heart or favorite things and then when the sales launches and midnight or 1 am you can check out faster.  Click below to see the whole collection and heart items.

I have my expectations set very low because I think it is all going to sell out quickly.

how i cleared up my acne

Wednesday, March 25, 2015
I never imagined that I would write a post about skin care. I have had years of my life when my skin was great and years when it was awful but in general, I have never loved my skin. It was pretty clear in my 30's but into my 40's it was AWFUL.  However, I have finally found a skin care routine that has really cleared up my skin and I want to share it with others who might have the same problems I did.

For the past several years, I had hormonal breakouts every 2 weeks.  It was embarrassing and I became pretty self conscious about it.  My doctor put me on an antibiotic for a few months about 3 years ago and it cleared up but then it came right back. I do not like being on antibiotics long term so I did not want to try them again.

Last fall, I finally had enough and went to a new dermatologist.  She tried a few things.  None of them worked and I had reactions to one medication.  She eventually said she did not have any more options for me.

Out of complete frustration, I came across an article on Pantothenic Acid and acne.  I read the article and it really clicked for me.  My hair and skin have always been a tad oily compared to my peers.  My micronutrient and mineral tests always show that I am low in pantothenic acid.  Also, I have adrenal and thyroid disease which is related to this article.

BEFORE doing anything, I ran this by my adrenal and thyroid doctor.  But she agreed that it would be safe and plausible for me to increase my dosage of pantothenic acid and see if it worked.  I was not willing to take the mega doses that some suggest.  I was already taking this brand below (one capsule once a day).

Solgar Pantothenic Acid 550mg 100 Vegetable Capsules

However, my doctor and I decided to try two capsules twice a day.  I did read that a few people experience hair thinning on this regimen. Since I did not want to risk that and these other supplements prevent hair thinning and boost the effectiveness of the pantothenic acid, we added this supplement as well.

Twin Lab L-Cysteine  I take one of these with each dose of the Pantothenic Acid.

So, I take two pantothenic acid capsules and one L-cysteine (twice a day- usually with breakfast and after dinner).

I went back to my dermatologist for a check up and told her about these supplements.  She could not believe the improvement in my skin.  She was not aware of these supplements but said she was going to go research them because of the results I had achieved.  I am telling you that the results were fast. My shiny forehead was gone within days. Also, my hair is not oily at all anymore.  I can even skip a day washing it (which I NEVER did before).  I have had only one small blemish in the last 2-3 months! It has been miraculous for me.  I wish I had before and after photos.  My skin is the best it has been in years.

I am sure that some people will take longer to respond or have to increase or decrease their dosage but this worked for me and it worked very quickly.

I also changed my cleansing routine shortly after the supplements.  I now wash with this soap

IMG_6694

You can sometimes find it at Target.  Or you can order it here.

It is awesome.  My skin feels so soft and clean.  It is not drying at all but very cleansing.  I use it morning and night. I cannot imagine ever using anything else to wash my face.

At night, after washing with that soap, I use Bragg Apple Cider Vinegar Organic Raw -- 32 fl oz
on a cotton round as a toner. Do not rinse if off!  I leave that to dry and then follow with a very light moisturizer. The apple cider vinegar has balanced my skin and helped even out the tone.  I have some red marks from my acne and they have lightened immensely and quickly from the ACV.  I have no doubt they will be gone shortly.

If you are new to Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) as a facial toner, start slow.  Shake the bottle well (you want to get the "mother" which is a mix of proteins, enzymes and good bacteria at the bottom of the bottle) and either wet your cotton round with water first or dilute the vinegar.  It might sting a bit.  And your eyes might water a bit.  Just stick with it.  I promise, you will see amazing results.  I use it full strength now but I worked up to that over a few weeks.

My new routine is so easy and inexpensive and my skin has never looked or felt better.  I will never have flawless skin but I am so much happier since it has cleared up.

Also, my boys use these in addition to the soap with great success.  I think teen boys like the ease of these and they have worked great!

IMG_6693

Obviously, I am not a dermatologist or any kind of medical doctor.  I have seen such a dramatic improvement after years of frustration that I wanted to share my finds with y'all.  PLEASE talk to your doctor before adding any of these supplements to your routine.

Also, if you have any questions, leave them in the comments and I will answer them as best I can.

Spring shorts

Saturday, February 28, 2015
I really hurt my upper back somehow.  I am not really sure what I did to it.  I might have injured it in my Barre class.  I have stuck with the bar method now for 18 months. Can you believe that?! I try to go 4 times a week but this week, I have been in bed with heat or ice on my back.  I am having muscle spasms next to and under my shoulder blades in the mid back.  It literally hurts to breathe sometimes.  I went to the doctor yesterday and he gave me muscle relaxers but they knock me out cold.  Which is fine if I want to sleep all day but that is kind of hard to do with 3 kids and a practice to run.

My back feels feels fine when I wake up and then as soon as I start moving around the spasms return with a vengence.

Anyway, I have spent a lot of time in my bed surfing the internet, reading and watching TV.  That's not always good because I like to shop via the internet.  My husband some people might even say that I have a slight internet shopping addiction. But for the sake of this post, let's just ignore those people.

So, I needed some new shorts.  I was wearing my shorts kinda long.  But now that I actually have muscle tone in my legs (and the style is shorter), I decided to freshen up my short wardrobe.  Keep in mind that Summer last about 6-8 months in Houston.  So, I wear shorts A LOT.

imageService

I ordered these and they arrived the other day.  They are so cute.  The fabric, colors and fit are awesome. They are longer on me than the model  (I'm shorter:) They run a tad big. Although it is so hard to tell with vanity sizing these days.  I am typically a 2 or 4 in shorts.  I do not like them tight. The 2 was perfect for me in these.

I also ordered these.  This length is a little more modest but still looks fresh and not dated (like my old shorts).  I love these.  They fit perfectly and will match a lot.  They were very flattering on.

imageService-2

Finally, I ordered these.  I was hesitant as I thought they might be too similar to the top ones.  But they are my favorite.  The material is a pique and the pattern is so cute in person. The lengths on all of these are perfect.

I am 47 years old so I do not feel comfortable in  really short shorts but I also was feeling frumpy in my longer (7 inch) shorts. These all seem to be the perfect compromise.  They are a classic cut but look on trend.

I also spotted these on sale and grabbed a pair in pink and white.

I bought the 5 inch length but they also come in 3 and 1/2 inch length.

Shorts

Usually, I am not a fan of denim shorts.  But these are the MOST comfortable shorts! Between my reward points and the sale, they were so inexpensive, I decided to give them a try.  And I am so glad that I did. I already wore them once and got compliments on them.  You might want to size down one size as these are loose fitting.

Romper

And finally for Kate, this is the BEST purchase I have made.  It is her favorite article of clothing right now  In fact, I went back and ordered it in the lighter wash since she loves it so much and wants to wear it everyday.  If it came in my size, I'd order it for me.

Oh wait, They did just get a adult version!

cn9383798

I might have to try this one.

These shorts for girls are really cute too.

These are all GREAT deals right now.  If you have a card use code STYLE for 40% off and code PREVIEW for 30% off if you don't have a card.  I rarely shop in stores anymore.  I hate driving around town and have limited time between working and mom/family stuff.  Plus, there always seem to be great sales online that are not necessarily happening in store.

I think we are all set on shorts for now.  But since I am kind of bed bound until this muscle stops torturing me, I'll probably do some more pretend internet shopping posts.

These are a few of my favorite things

Friday, November 16, 2012
As all the catalogs start to pour in, I really enjoy seeing what is out in the stores.  I love fashion and I love shopping.  But these days I prefer to do it from my computer.  I loathe going to the stores during the holidays.  I get a bit claustrophobic. So, I thought I'd share some things for the next month that are on my radar.  Some I might be buying as gifts and some I just think are really cute.  This post is all about little girls but don't worry, I will post other ideas as well. (don't worry, I linked everything)

For little girls....

I LOVE these quilted Boots

And these Wellies of course.

How fabulous would they be in Sparkling Silver or Hot Pink on a rainy day?

How cute would this ♥ tee  be for Valentine's Day?  Or anyday.

And all of these dresses are so cute....

This one would be so cute for a Christmas of New Years's party...

And I am LOVING Tartan for both me and for Kate.  Look at these...

They even have a little girl's bubble necklace out now!

And on my goodness...how cute is this tulle backpack for sleepovers???

These cupcake lip glosses would be a perfect stocking stuffer...

and this belt would be good for the stocking too.

And as far as a creative toy, I know one little girl that has this on her Christmas list...

Have a great weekend.  I'll be back soon:)
